Aftermarket Window Switches ..... Are they available?
I was wondering if you can swap your regular switches for the ones that let you close the window with one touch of a button? (i.e. you can press the window button once and it will open by itself, but you can't pull it up and have the window close by itself)
RE: Aftermarket Window Switches ..... Are they available?
The one-touch up and down function of the MY 2002+ ML’s is built into the switch assembly. While it might be possible to retrofit the 2002 windows switches into a MY 1998-2001, it would likely be too costly and very troublesome. My recommendation would be to look at something like the autoloc one touch kits:

I used the autoloc (as mentioned above) for the sunroof in my H2 and it works great! It looks like you could use this on any window but it could get a little pricey as you would need 1 per window. http://www.autoloc.com/detail.lasso?itemid=WC1000

Does anyone know how the pinch protection works. Is that also programmed into the switch or computer or is there an additional sensor? Just curious as that might complicate a retrofit also.

by pinch protection do you mean when the window is going express up by itself from the double hit of the button and it feels pressure it stops and backs an inch? The ML500 has that, I believe it to be in the window assembly, not the switch

We had this same debate a while ago on this board. The Autoloc retrofit is supposed to have that built into the unit, but it means that it must be installed where the full load from the window motor is available to it. It should be fairly simple to do an install of 1 Autoloc unit into the center console at the window switches, keeping the standard 1-touch down function and having the single Autoloc unit providing 1-touch up for both front windows. The unknown in that theory is whether the full window load is available at the window switches or only some instrument current...
RE: Aftermarket Window Switches ..... Are they available?
Pinch protection for both the factory system in MY2002+ ML’s and the Autoloc aftermarket add-on is implemented by sensing the current draw on the window motor. My understanding is that the window switches in the console for pre-2002 ML’s do carry the full current load of the window motors. The Autoloc retrofit should be an easy upgrade with all wiring performed in the console.
