oh what a great day this was. sun was shining and we (mah girl and I) were about to visit some friends in their summercottage.
I had just refueled my seadoo waterjet and was about to leave the gasstation, I put it in DRIVE and the whole car bounces unusually hard forward.
Oh well...I drive off...
suddenly the transmission wont change gears. it runs on the same gear and I cannot change it manually. it's stuck.
I stop the car. turn it off. waits one-two minutes. starts it up again. same thing when I put it in Drive.
I phone my local mechanic-friend and he tells me to stop somewhere and try to reset the "computer" by removing the +-connection from the battery and leave it off for about 15-20 minutes.
so I do so.
after 20min...same thing. but this time the "BAS ESP" warning light comes on and goes off after about 2-3 minutes.
so my fellow ML-owners...what kind of trouble am I in? [:(][:(]
sounds like your locked in 2nd gear "limp home mode."
This happened to me and it turned out that wiring in my engine got chewed on by something and was shorting out the computer. I had to change out wiring harness in the engine which was not cheap or quick. My symptoms were similar. Drove somewhere, shut off car for a few minutes, restarted then bam... won't shift out of 2nd. Had to drive home then to the dealer like that the next day.
Can't suggest anything for you except to hope it's something much simpler. Sorry for your bad fortune. Good luck.

BAS ESP light is because you have to reset steering sensor by turning wheel all the way to the left and to the right.
anytime you disconnect and reconnect power, that's what you have to do.
The tranny problem could be a transmission control module. Hook up to dealer computer and they will read fault codes.
