never loan to family! ever!
So I loaned my ml500 to my parents for 2 weeks so they could tow their ’68 Larson boat to the St. Laurence Seaway- around 700 miles. No good deed goes unpunished, right? They backed into a tree, left the windows open in the rain and CHANGED ALL THE RADIO STATIONS! The estimate for the bumper is in, the carpets are dry, and I found NPR again. The problem is now a “hum that sounds like it is coming from the rear end. Not really a hum more like the sound of driving on an open grate bridge. Loader when faster, quieter when slower – you know the drill. Funny thing is you can only hear it when the windows are closed; it is almost like it is not an outside the car noise. Does anyone have a suggestion where to start looking?

Same here. It's ironic that we can drive our truck all year long but when it comes to loan it to someone, something, no matter how minute, would go wrong. I let my father drove it from point A to point B (5 minutes tops), VOILA! Check Engine light is on in a heart beat...What gives?

I suppose you were never a cost and a bother to your parents while they were raising you as a child?

RE: never loan to family! ever!
we dont really need to get into the time i totaled both my fathers cars at once. ... it long story and involves snow, a big hill, and a belief that 18 year olds live forever. so back to my sorrow.
Has anyone ever had the open grate bridge noise in there car before? if i ignore it, will it fix itself?

My guess [for the noise in the back] would be the tailgate/rear hatch is not sealing fully. When your parents hit the tree, there must have been slight bent somewhere around the hatch. Look closely around the hatch. You may need to adjust possibly 3 places: next to the latch (I believe it's called door stop or something like that), and then there are 2 pastic tabs on both sides at/near your eye level.
Don't sweat about the car. Things happen. Don't let those things define your day/mood for the day.

I was thinking the same thing myself. [:)] Those little adjustment things are called the bump stops.

It is very easy to remove and replace the rear bumper. Just remove four bolts and pull it off. I did it myself once.

Can't blame them for changing radio stations if you had NPR on.
