Are optic and non-optic CD changers interchangeable?

Hello Group,
I'd appreciate if any of you can tell me if optic and non-optic CD changers are interchangeable, installation wise?!
Also, can any of the two units play MP3 files (as in home made CD's)?

Finally, is there any after-market units which will fit in place of the original units and what is the degree of difficulty and are there any favorites!?

Vehicle in question is a 2002 ML.

Thank you all.

I believe they are not interchangeable and they cannot play MP3 and I know of no aftermarket units that will fit correctly

F/Optic and non-F/optic CD changers are not interchangeable.
Here is the Eclipse head unit. dewaltz has it in his ML.

The 2002 is Fibre Optic only ..... which is better by all accounts.
