Power steering rack - fluid is coming through

Hi,

I have seen a lot of messages about leaking steering system. I located mine and it is under the car in so called steering rack. There are two 'pumps"? Or actually I dont know what they are. Could someone help out a little bit. The two lines (metal hoses) are obviously output and input . I think both are leaking. Is there a way to tighten them? They have star looking "bolt" in the end where hoses comes/goes.

do a search on steering rack leak.
Lots of info on this.

I had my leak fixed by replacing the o rings.

yes you can tighten the lines. they have 2 torx heads on them. on my 99, i had a leak only when the system was under pressure. the dealer could not find it. the fluid would not come out until i parked after driving. I climbed under the vehicle and tightend the torx bolts on the rack----no more problem[:D]

What sort of tool you used for them (is it a wrench)? It is still kind of hard area to work (lack of space...)

I assume from this question you are not a strong DIY guy.

I do not recommend you attempt this repair yourself.
Bite the bullet and take it to a shop

I was just wondering that it is not a torx head I have ever seen. It must need a strong arm to loose or tighten it...

Sorry, it was wrong of me to assume that....
Anyway, I see from your other post you've changed your own Crankshaft sensor. This should be a DIY if you can manage, but usually the fix involves removing the lines and replacing the rubber orings with neoprene ones.

I could'nt get the nuts to budge - the tech at the dealer used a really long cheater bar and it took all his might to get it loose. He had special tools too...

Which is why I think the standard fix at the dealer is to replace the entire steering rack...

Which is also why I don't recommend this as a DIY

Good luck
