RE: 8000K HID

I have to replace the HID bulb on my retrofit xenon headlamps. Did you remove the whole lamp assembley to put in the new bulbs or was it fairly easy? Any tips on replacing the D2R bulb?

Thanks

RE: 8000K HID

Since I already had HID head lights, the aftermarket bulbs were approximatelly $120.

I was pleasantly surprised by the color output because when I replaced just one bulb, and turned both of them on to see the side by side comparison ... they were the same color at first, but after 30 seconds the difference is tremendous.

It seems to give off a lot more light as well.

RE: 8000K HID

The hardest part of the swap was the driver side lamp because the windshield wiper fluid reservois leaves very little room to reach the bulb.

Basically, you take off the headlight protective cover. Disconnect the HID wiring. Remove the safety clamp by turning it clockwise or vise versa and switching the lamp.

Took me less than 1/2 hour to do it. It's a learning experience.

RE: 8000K HID

I think I need to replace mine also, like Roadsession, mine is turning to yellow, Now the question, Is the Bi-X bulb is the same as the Old Xenon bulb? Do they use the same DR2 type bulb?

No, yours is the DS2 bulb.
Look for the Philips DS2 4300K HID bulb. That's the factory OEM and provides best balance of 'whiteness' and on the road brightness.

I disagree with some of the article comments..

First, thanks for the article.. Always interesting..

Like in many cases, that article is just a personal opinion or interpretaion based on some real facts, but there are a lot of other real facts that need to be taken into account and which normally are not.

Noting, first, that humans have a very poor perception and resolution for color and which is specially true for the blue color.

The best drivers do not only use their limited color perception for night driving. They use their black and white peripheral vision which is much more sensitive to motion and to light. Halogens are close to tungsten filaments and really contain a lot of yellow which almost tints a lot of what one can see and interfere with our pattern recognition and the use of color for correct object recogniton. I find halogen light patterns are very poor, spotty, and irregular and camuflages many of the patterns that we find in front of us.

I find the even light color/pattern/spectrum of the HID's much more addequate for black and white night vision and for correct color, contrast, and pattern recognition.

One of the best proofs of this is that at night in dark places, we only see black and white (night vision rods) because they are the only ones sensitive enough to detect small light variations and patterns. Color vision, at night, is practically useless unless you have the correct light spectrum and intensity..

At the end, it is up to every person to test and evaluate what works best for them since everybody is build with different vision specs. Even glasses, contact lenses, and eye operations (some people can see some of the infrared spectrum after certain types of operations) can dramatically change our night visual acuity/keeness/processing capabilities... For me, my ML HID beam pattern, light intensity, and spectrum has been a great visual improvement for my night driving..

My $0.02 contribution... [:)]
