HOW DO YOU CHECK MOTOR AND TRANSMISSIOIN OIL LEVELS ON ML320?

i have an ML320 2000, and today i wanted to check the levels of oil for the transmission and also motor oil, but all i see in there is a pull out thing that i think is for the motor oil on the left side, but i cant find the one to check the transmission oil. how do you check for that and where is the pull out for that located?
my other car is a TOYOTA and it is very easy to check but this one i have no idea. if you guys have a picture for this please post that as well.
thanks a lot

No need to check the transmission oil in the ML.

The oil can be checked by the dipstick, or simply from the dash by holding in the button by the speedo when cranking up the engine. The odometer display will indicate the oil status. See your owners manual for details.

TRANSMISSION is "filled for life" therefore mercedes capped off the tranny dip stick. You have to buy a shop only dip stick if you really want to take a peek. (*note you don't keep the tranny dip stick in while you drive)

There are a bunch of posts regarding trany fluid. Most people seem to agree(and techs even though MB does not think you should) that at 100K it is worthwhile to get the fluid changed.

As already stated the dip stick is for engine oil. the trany fluid capped tube is at the rear of the engine.

RE: HOW DO YOU CHECK MOTOR AND TRANSMISSIOIN OIL LEVELS ON ML320?

Hi Mdman126,

The tranny oil should actually be changed or checked every 10K miles...that's what I was told by my MB dealer when my 2000 ml320 (identical to yours) tranny took a dump at 65k miles. Luckily I was under warranty and they changed my tranny. They stated to me that there was no oil left in my tranny. Dry as hell. So they changed my tranny. Now every few thousand miles I take it to my mechanic for that dipstick test as stated by another member earlier.
Bottom line? Take it from experience...if your car is out of warranty get that oil level checked out even if you have not reached 100K miles as is recommended by the MB dealer. I read in one of the truck magazines somewhere (i don't remeber where) that the ML tranny actually has a slow leak. In time, it will go "dry" if you don't check the levels.

RE: HOW DO YOU CHECK MOTOR AND TRANSMISSIOIN OIL LEVELS ON ML320?

the trans dip stick tube is along the firewall behind the center of the motor. you'll have to take the special MB tab off to check it and like the other guy said you'll need a dip stick to check it. or you can just get a trans service done at the dealer and you'll know it was done right.

Instructions for checking the oil from the dash that were given earlier in this thread are incorrect. Its easy to do though, check your manual for accurate instructions
