Winter is just around the corner. I was wondering if the tires that came with my '04 ML 350 don't require the use of snow chains to go thru the snow. And if I have to get snow tires, do I have to purchase 4 sets or just 2. Need advice please. Thanks.
What tires do you have installed? ANYTHING you do to the wheels should be done in fours, whether it's chains or new tires. Personally I like my Dunlop WinterSport M2s, but if you frequently need chains you may want to do more research.
Thanks for the reply JD, but I can't tell you what tires I have on the truck right now coz it's parked 20 miles away (train station). But they are H rated, and AS performance rated as well.
Rud, a German company makes or at least use to make chains for the ML vehicles. As far as I know they are the only chains recommend by Mercedes in Germany. I’m not sure whether Mercedes in the US recommends them at all. They fit specific tire sizes. Below is a link to a photo of the information tag on one of the bags, should you want to obtain a set.
I’ve actually never had to use them but it’s nice to know they are there if the weather gets really scary.
Not sure of your location but I'm positive I read that

snow chains are ill advised for the ML...especially under warranty. Your tires will be fine in snow if they are OEM--mine were before I ditched them and the stock 18s for AMG 19s. I have the Dunlop SP9000s and they are pathetic in the snow. Actually I would say they are in fact dangerous.

Thanks for the info guys. Here's what I have on the truck: Dunlop sport 5000, 255/60x17 106H M+S rated (does this means the tires are for Mud and Snow?)
Loch, I'm worried that my tires might be just like yours, since they're almost similar. Why did you say they're dangerous?

with a VERY hard compound that gets harder in cold weather and there is too much contact so that snow does not get compacted and released through the channels. They become like slicks with no traction.
5000s are o.k. Don't waste your money. try them out and see what happens.
