Was something loose? I filled my gas tank, and my fuel meter never reset to the full tank reading..

Was something loose? I filled my gas tank, and my fuel meter never reset to the full tank reading. It was closed to the empty mark. I thought I finally bumped into what some forum members have already experienced before with their tanks.

Though strangely, I saw that my gas meter will continue to go down to the full empty position as I drove. After 300 miles, I refilled my tank and same all, the gas meter will still show empty.

But the next time I added gas, I decided to shake the gas-nozzle inside my tank refill port.. Just for the heck of it since I thought it was already broken and I had time to kill and why not...

Guess what..!! I started my ML and the gas meter is working again..!! and has been working since..

Is there something that can come loose, around the gas tank assembly, and cause the gas meter reading not to reset correctly..? Connection..?

Did shaking the gas nozzle inside the tank do the trick..? or was just a coincidence..

Whatever it was, it is now working.. Just sharing my experience to see if anybody had have any similar experience or if they know that a loose connection around the gas tank assembly can cause this problem. If so, then I will need to try to secure any loose conenction around there...

AC

It's always possible that by shaking the tank you could dislodge a stuck

fuel sending unit, but that's as far fetched an explanation as there is. It's coincidence. Sounds like you do have the fuel pump/sending unit problem. Have it checked out, there may codes stored for the malfunction.

RE: Was something loose? I filled my gas tank, and my fuel meter never reset to the full tank readin

Its a problem that I have encountered many times too. Sent it back to the dealer countless times, finally the service manager said that the problem was with the instrument cluster, and they will order one to install on my 2001 ml320 for free. I would suggest you keep bugging them about this before your warranty runs out!

Hope this helps!

Patrick.

I have had the same problem with my 2001 ML 430. I can fill the tank and it may only read 1/2 to 3/4 full. As soon as I stop someplace and restart the truck, it will show full. I mentioned it to my service manager when I was getting routine service done, they replaced the instrument cluster. It had no effect, I still have the same problem. Its no big deal because it only effects the truck until the next time I stop and restart the again. I will mention it again at the next service visit. Maybe they will replace the engine this time.

Yours is clearly a sending unit/fuel pump problem. I'm surprised the dealer didn't do this first b4 replacing the instrument cluster. Did they chwck for a bad sending unit??

RE: Was something loose? I filled my gas tank, and my fuel meter never reset to the full tank readin

My gauge goes to empty upon refueling to a full tank, the gauge will remain that way unless you drive about an hour then it will return to normal.

I've been having this issue about a month or two, need to make an appointment with the dealer.

My guess is the fuel sending unit. Hopefully my extended warranty will cover it.

Question is... does anyone know what causes this? I've read gas with a high sulfur content will cause this. Any ideas?
