Does anyone have recommendation for the best infant seat for ML320? Our daughter will be giving birth in a few months and we would prefer to get the best seat that will fit the ML without hassles.
We've used Britax from day two. We're on our third, following child's growth. Best, hands down!
The latch system is available on many seats (brands).
Make sure you get that, 02+ MLs (maybe earlier models too, I don't know) are ready for it, it's easy and really secure!
Crap.
Just noticed your ML was a 1999.
Check the back seats for anchors at the level of the fold between butt and back cushions.
Someone here's bound to know and could lift the doubt about latch in 99 MLs...
Regardless, you can use normal restraint and tethers if latch does not work. All latch equiped seats are pretty much allowing you to do either

Thanks,
I'll check on the anchor for the latch system. I read about Britax at a web site (howstuffworks.com) and there were several listed. Which one do you have?

For a baby seat you need to get the MB OEM seat (with baby-smart token), because you can't disable the passanger airbag manually and you really want your youngun to be on the front seat next to you if you're driving alone.
For a group 1 seat (9kg-18kg), no baby-smart seat is required (since they are to be put in the back seat).
I have a Britax Romer DUO, which uses the (standard in Europe) ISOFIX latches on the back seat. In the certification manual from that seat, it explicitly lists MY02+ as a requirement for the latches, so I don't think you have latches on the back seat. In that case you can either use the standard seatbelt in the DUO or the Britax King/Quickfix seats: all very good seats.

TCP: when was the last time you had to buy a child seat?
Over here, nearlt all stores have only one model that uses the ISOFIX latches. And I can know: an ISOFIX babyseat was an absolute requirement for me, and I did not find one shop where they had more than one ISOFIX model in their lineup.
Even with the limited choice, I have nothing but good things to say about my seat [:)]
However, you probably will find that for the first year you will simply want to find a base attachment that will work with whatever stroller / car seat combo that your daughter uses. This is MUCH easier and keeps you from having to wake the baby every time you take it in or out. They simple just sit in their little car seat and you lift the whole thing out.
Check out any BabysRUs and they will have all of the options.

I am not sure about the government mandates on child safety. Here, it also depends on the State you live in. Texas requires child seats (boosters) until 8 years of age I think, while others are more lenient.
The Husky came with the LATCH system, but still supports anchoring using the tether and the rear seat belt if your car is not so equipped with the LATCH system. Out 02 ML has the anchors, like yours, but our previous SUV did not. I am unsure as to when it became (if it even is) mandated that car manufacturers had to implement LATCH in their vehicles.
Many believe that the US has the more progrssive approach to many things and are in fact mistaken. That might be such example. Another is on emissions, when level 3 and 4 are more stringent than current LEV standards in the US. Yet another, 16x9 TVs and broadcasting has benn in place in Europe for a while, it's really been here for a few years for a few metropolitan areas. On the other hand, we have digital HD TV signal, while you still have to agree on a standard (is D2MAC dead yet?).
We love the Britax seats we've had, and feel really good about our child's safety in them.
I'd have to say that this conditionned our last purchase. We were happy with seat number two, and picked seat number three by Brand, Britax, and had a choice of 2 seats with the LATCH system. The Husky, and the other one, which might have been a booster seat, I'm not sure, and we concluded that we would buy the Husky and later upgrade to a four Britax (booster) rather than going halfway and purchase only one seat!

We have also been using Britax since our son moved out of his infant seat. The safest place for a child is in the back seat, and is probably more so when you're the only driver. Attending to traffic should be your first priority when you're driving. If you need to attend to your child, then having him/her in the rear seat will force you to stop.
The BabySmart seats are fairly scarce here in the US, and last when we ordered one, the dealer needed our SLK's VIN, since MBUSA was giving preference to two-seater owners.
LATCH compatible seats are very common in the US, although the ISOFIX (with the fixed latch points) are less so, at least where I have looked. Our Britax's LATCH seats have belts, which is fine.
LATCH points were introduced with the facelifted MLs (02+).
We went with the Recaro Start for both of our kids. Until we got the second one there would always be a fight over who got the Start and who got the Britax. When you look at the inside of most car seats and see that they are really nothing more than modified beer coolers, you will begin to appreciate the construction that goes into the Recaro. I addition, I figure that a company devoted to making seats for racing cars and airplanes would probably know a thing or two about making a safe child's seat. One thing to remember with this seat is that you will need to buy the optional foot rest or else the seat has a tendency to woork its way backward every time you tighten the belt.
