Tipping service assistants?

I'm just curious how many people here tip the service assistant people that work with you when you bring your car in for service? If so, how much is customary for good work and service? hmm....

RE: Tipping service assistants?

I would never tip anyone at a MB dealership. They are professionals and should give excellent service to everyone without being bribed. Reality, however, may be a different story. Very sad.

At 5 minutes before 5 on a Friday afternoon I can get my car looked at.

When all goes well I dont mind paying a courtesy visit the next day - it doesnt have to be money it can be something they like.

RE: Tipping service assistants?

Everyone expects a tip these days for just doing their job. Ever notice the panhandler cup the Starbucks employees put on the counter? Who's next, McDonalds and Burger King? On second thought, maybe there's nothing wrong with that. Just remember this, if you ask me the time and I have to look at my watch, I'll be expecting a $1.00.

RE: Tipping service assistants?

heh, my dealership charges a minimum of $291 for the A service which basically is an oil change, an inspection, and topping off the fluids. I can go to Jiffy Lube and get most of this done for far far less. I don't see any need to tip.

Try another approach

I give him a bottle of good vino every Xmas. It's the season to give and at the same time he wouldn't feel uncomfortable with it.

Slipping a twenty to him every visit doesn't seem professional to him and to you.

RE: Tipping service assistants?

Generally I don't tip. However, when I had the ML in for it's last visit before the warranty expired, I tipped $100.

The sad thing...they still had horrible service.

My lesson learned is that if you are going in for a major issue and ONE mechanic/technician is going to work on your vehicle to try and talk directly to him at the beggining and let him know that if he does a good job that you would like to express your gratitude.

This is the poor guy that is getting hammered by the Service Advisor and Shop Foreman to complete every job in less and less time.

...and thank goodness so that my cost is controlled! Actually for non standard jobs I find the mechanic has some lee way to judge the time involved and I'm given an estimate of hours beforehand. I've often paid that quote but sometimes less if they do it quicker. The amount of money dealerships dish out weekly to run a service operation is quite impressive. It's no wonder we pay what we do. On the other hand, if I was going to tip a guy it would be the guy doing the work not the SAs...I've never heard or seen anyone tipping anyone. I have mailed in one letter though with a personal check to the guy who installed my kompressor.

If your SA is a cow, should you tip your SA?

Before!

.....~~....~~

After!

....O--------O_
../|.88.........|_)

Warning:
Tipping an electronic cow is funny, but tipping a real cow is a felony in certian parts!

On a related subject. This law still is in the books:
It is illegal to pass a cow in Pine Island District, MN, without tipping your hat.
