Hi, Im actually asking these questions for my girlfriend, who owns a 1998 ML 320. I own a Porsche Boxster S and have a love for German Vechiles. I was shocked when I read how Mercedes Benz has handle this problem. How should we go about this? Has anyone had the transmission replaced out of warrenty? Should I have the car dianoised by Mercedes Benz, than go to another source for repair? The car transmission seems to slip and the "check engine light" came on...car began to drive sluggish (In the owner's manual, its says it goes into safe mode). Any input appreciated. Thanks in advance.
RE: Questions on 1998-99 ML320 transmission problem
MB Transmissions are generally bullet proof. With relatively low mileage, I would suggest taking it to a MBenz repair shop and run the codes. NOT the Dealer. I would think it's probably a road speed sensor or something to that effect. There are mobile repair shops that do a great job and you don't have to worry about towing.

P.S., the car has about 81,000 miles.
This has likely nothing to do with the transmission. It is your mass air flow sensor. Check Engine LIght should be diagnosed by simple OBDII scanner - that will reveal the source of the problem. Go to any Autozone.
RE: Questions on 1998-99 ML320 transmission problem
I had a similar problem with my car and it turned out to be the main engine wiring harness was partially gnawed through by some animal. After replacing wiring harness it was fixed for me. Was not related to transmission but "limp home mode" was the symptom.
Check the codes.
and almost forgot, 98-99's had the transmission warranty extended to 100,000 mile by mercedes automatically due to lawsuit and using non-synthetic oils in the early builds. So if it is actually the transmission, you have a shot at being covered by the factory.
RE: Questions on 1998-99 ML320 transmission problem
I'm sorry these transmissions are not bullet proof. Every car magazine you read clearly faults this!
My transmission went out at 65K miles. I'm gonna pick it up today from the dealer. The only symptom it was giving me was as the car decelerated, the shift felt kinda "rough". Initially I was told that this was normal, it is a heavy car, and AWD. That's bullcrap. The dealer called me this morning saying that they are installing a brand new tranny in my 2000 ml 320, at 65K miles. Thank God for Starmark! I can't wait to drive my baby home tonight!
