2002 ml320, brake rotors question

On average how often am I looking at replacing my brake rotors? I'm not a brake hog. I drive about 10k highway miles a year?

After how many miles should I begin checking them?

As a rough rule of thumb,

the front rotors last three pads: OEM plus 2 changes.
On my MY99, I was getting 40k miles per pad change. On my MY02, the fronts lasted 25k miles but 9k was due to another driver with unknown (but hilly) conditions (Colorado Springs).

RE: 2002 ml320, brake rotors question

As a rule rotors usually last thru two sets of pads. That is if you use OEM pads. I am told that if some aftermarket pads are used that are harder or more abrasive the rotors sometimes will not even last thru the first set of pads. It is wise to check the rotor thickness (mike them) with every pad change to be sure they are above the min spec in thickness. MB does not suggest turning them and this is due to the way the ABS operates. Of course if they are scored and grooved they should be scrapped also. They can be resurfaced if it is done witout removing any large amount of metal.
