I've decided that paying $70 to change the oil is rediculous. I've always changed my own oil until the purchase of my ML-320. I've been unable to locate any specific "how to" instructions for oil & filter change on this rig. Your input/suggestions would be appreciated. BTW, do I need any special tools?
the filter wrench is available at walmart for about $4.00
and the topsider oil extractor is available from marine stores for about $55.
There is also an extractor available from automotive suppliers like Griots Garage that work well.
remember you need one with an 8.5 quart capacity.
I found an electric oil change pump that dispenses right into whatever container i want to use.
(I fill up 2 1gallon milk jugs and just drop them off to my local pepboys for disposal.) I got it at a garage sale for $5 so i dont know where it is available.

why are you guys changing the oil through the top?
isn't it better to drain from the pan in order to rid the engine of any debris? i know it is faster and cleaner from the top but changing the oil is the most important maintenance task to perform and i want to do it right.
am i correct?

Your right, changing the oil is important. I use the local Hobby Shop on the Base (Retired Military), and drain it from the bottom. I was just passing info about the Topsider. I'm probably going to buy one, maybe change it every other time from the top.
Everyone has made viable points. I prefer to change the oil the old fashion way - from the oil pan drain.
For some reason MB has made this task difficult, when removing the plug the oil comes out at such an angle that it contacts steering components and makes a mess.
Anyone have any enlightening suggestions as to how one could make this more pleasant?
