Does exhaust and/or intake increase or decrease fuel efficiency?

i have k/n stock replacement air filter.. notice super small tiny difference =)

adding a k/n intake filter will only slightly increase fuel efficiency.. 1-2 mpg..

other than a slight noise difference in hard acceleration, on my 2000 ML55, no difference.. i still get horrible mpg =P
