1998 ML320 A/C Problem

A strange problem with my ML320 A/C. It works for about 2 minutes, then stops blowing cold air. When it stops blowing cold air, the compressor is still "running", i.e. the compressor clutch is engaged and the compressor wheel is turning. The low side pressure is about 65 psi (when the a/c stops working) but the low-side pipe turns warm, as if the compressor has turned off. During the time it works, the condensor fans come on and off normally and the low-side pipe is cold as expected. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be ?

l had exactly the same problem..it's the condenser...one question though...is there water dripping from the evaporator onto the ground below, if there isn't, then it's the condender..

Could be low charge? low side full, comp running should be 30-35 on a standard day, high side 150+. Otherwise low on R134

Yes, R134, Tree Hugger friendly Freon, Replaces R12, NOT friendly old type.

RE: 1998 ML320 A/C Problem

Hi,

If it is a condensor problem, it is strange. What kind of condensor problem ? I know it is not a leak, and it cant be a clog otherwise it would not work when idling.

The freon pressure on lo side is 65, cant seem to get this silly R134a high-side adapter to stay connected, will try again tomorrow.

Another thing I noticed is that, when it comes on, it stays on for ever if the car idles. But as soon as roll it, a minute is all it stays on. And once it goes off, will not start back on even at idle.

What about the belt ? Does anyone think this may be the reason ? How can I tighten the belt ?

Thanks for all your help,

Saumil
