lt poured all day here in Guelph, yesterday,and every once in a while, l would get a "Hollow" sound or pinging from above my head where the moonroof is....like there is no insulation there.....is this a known problem....l ,vaguely remember a forum member mentioning something about the insulation coming loose, is that correct?????

That's probably just a large droplet hitting the rear part of the roof, causing it to resonate.
The pre-'00 MLs didn't have the roof insulation anyway. [8)]

Thanks Drew, Would you know, if it is possible to add that insulation to my "ML"..l can't imagine why not...are the roof liner's different from 99 to 00 [?]
I have a 99 ML and there is insulation in the roof (although very minimal). It looks like dynamat (bascially just tar paper). There are a couple of small strips in the hollow area where the sunroof slides back and then a couple of more strips above the back.
I know this because one of the strips of tar paper fell off the roof and onto my sunroof. The technician indicated that he replaced it with the newer insulation. He claimed that the newer insulation not only uses and adhesive, but also magnets to keep it in place.
I suspect that if you remove the headlinner you could really improve on the insulation (at least for a 99MY). However, I am not about to take that one on.[:)]
