My wife just called me from her ML....It's a nice evening here in the Washington DC metro area. She decided to open the moonroof/sunroof. Guess what? It won't close now. Any suggestions as to the problem? [:(] Thanks.
Use the manual closing tool that comes with your ML. It isn't hard; even a woman can do it... hahaha. Sorry ladies! You have to open the cover of the overhead control panel with something (a flat tip screw driver works best) and then use the crank handle that is supplied with the ML when it comes new. This is shown on page 272 of the owners manual for my year 2001 ML; your year might be different. There is a fuse that controls the moon roof, so that might be the problem. I don't remember which fuse it is. There are two different fuse compartments; one is under the hood on the right side as you face the engine from the front of the vehicle, the other is on the passenger side kick panel to the right of where your passengers feet go. I hope this helps.

Actually when she got home, the sunroofroof was 3/4 closed and would not go past that point. It would back up and return, but go no further than 3/4 closed. I used the manual crank but it was still jammed so I had to force it, and it sounded and looked like something looking like a long black bracket that runs the width of the glass in the front "broke free". It didn't sound good, but the sunroof finally closed. It was very hard to see as it was dark out. I hope there was no permanent damage.....nice [:(!]
From your description of a long black bracket in the front, I would say it is the pop-up wind deflector. This piece broke on mine and fell into the passenger compartment.
It is a common problem on the ML for the arms to this piece to break. They are made out of plastic.
If it turns out to be this part, be sure to mention to the dealer that you are aware that it is a common problem. This might help toward a good will repair.
