Do I really need a spark plug removal tool?

I tried replacing the spark plugs for my 98 ML 320 but it seems hard to pull those wires off. I didn't want to pull so hard that I might break something.

So, do I really need the tool or not? If not, how did you guys do it. I'll try to post a step by step write-up when I figure stuff out.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers!

R.

17mm open end wrench will help you get some leverage on it

Randyman, as I understand, you absolutely need some tools to pull the spark plug boot off so that you don't separate the wire from the boot which will mean a very costly project.

Some people have used what is known as a Hazet 17MM offset wrench, others have used a spark plug boot puller.

Do a google search and you should find many vendors...

I just did it last month

Just remove the the coil packs and slowly rotate the boot holding the metal and loosen it up. Then slip the open end 17mm wrench as leverage will help you pull it out.

here's the older post you can refer to for help

jd has very good instructions on changing the plugs
and i just added the 17mm method.

Well I did spend around 3 hours on it. Remember the boot has been untoched for last 6 years so it is tight. Wear some mechanix glove from busting your knuckles.

good luck [:D]
