I bought a new key/remote from Ebay w/ intentions of putting in an auto start in my '99 ML320. The installer told me I needed a new key(or computer chip from a key} to install in the dash due to the MB security feature. Anyway.......I tried syncronizing the new key/remote according to the owners manual, using my good key to turn the keyswitch according to the manual..blah blah blah. To make a short story long[xx(]. It didn't work. Any suggestions, must the dealer perform this or what?
Do not believe that you can synch a key to use in your ML. Must be an key purchased from a dealer ordered to operate your vehicle. Also, have heard of noone that has successfully installed a remote start. Only heard of some who have tried, failed and screwed up other electronics in their car. This is after they have been told the same story that was given to you. Stop while you are ahead.
Actually, the metal key portion is what needs to be ordered by the dealer to fit specific vehicles. the remote/electronic part must be done by the dealer at least in my year. I'm not sure about other years. Synching the fob to the computer takes less time than plugging in the computer.
But if alleycat is a NY person why would you need to remote start it. It's not that cold here and someone jumping in to drive away is pretty likely.
Its the CRIMESTOPPER CS2015FM REMOTE START LCD PAGER which can be viewed here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEBWA%3AIT.
I really like this remote start, I had the earlier version of this unit on my Infiniti. I know it can be installed.
Back to my original question.....does anyone know how to sync a remote? I called the dealership here and they told me they would charge me an hour's labor ($100 and some change to do it), so it can be done. If no one can help me out I guess I'll stop being cheap and just get it done. Thanks for the replys by the way guys.

remote start only starts the car, but doesnt unlock the door.
whenever i had a key programmed they initially inserterd the key in the ignition while holding down one of the buttons. and according to my dealer rep. he says that keys that are not original to the vehicle will not work.
but it looks like your dealer says otherwise... let us know how it goes.
After the car is running it isn't very hard to break into a car....
The dealers point when speaking to the guy about not installing remote start was that you bypass the security measures that are built into the key system. The car's security is built around not allowing someone to start the car and drive off. After it's running all the other security features are tuned off. But hey, it's your car.....

thats only if you do a cheap remote start stand alone unit. the good newer stuff out there upgrades the alarm far beyond factory. and because the car is running doesnt mean it is easier to steal... the car will stay running for a predetermined amount of time, and will automatically shut off if the key is not inserted, and the ignition coil is not "sprung".
