Howdy all.
After changing my oil at 100K miles (Mobile1 15W50 - live in a hot climate, although it's still a little cold), I noticed a puttering noise. Low pitch exhuast-like noise that keeps pace with the RPMs and sometimes goes away and sometimes doesn't. I haven't noticed any performance degredation, and to the best of my ability, it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side/rear of the engine. It's low and grumbling and sounds like Put. Put. Put. Put. Put. Put. Put, etc... I also have noticed a little rattling in the engine (valves?) when I rev the engine hard...
I plan on getting a tune-up tomorrow which I hope will solve the problem(s).
I took the 320 in for a tune-up. I had the fuel filter and plugs changed along with an injector cleaner additive. ($675.00 - yikes).
The puttering is still there as expected. The mechanic tells me it might be a lose baffel in the exhaust system. Annoying but not harmful.
Anyway, on the way home, the check engine light comes on. Back to the mechanic. He hooks up the computer and we get a "Fuel Trim" message. He says it could be a vacuum leak, or any number of things, but that it could just be running a little lean after the servicing. He reset and said to watch if for the next couple of days.
The car has 100,000 miles on it so I hope I'm not in for a money pit.
I am having the same problem when my rpm is at 2500 and increasing the car start to make a resonating, and puttering sound like my exhaust has a hole in it or something. I have a service appointment next week
I hate this. arrgggh

sounds like the monolith inside either the resonator or catalytic converter is braking up causing the noise. it is an easy fix, just isolate and spotweld.
I like to here this kind of confidence and rugged-DIY individualism! I have never welded anything, nor have I any clue how to find/remove a catalytic converter and/or resonator. Assuming I could find both, are they easy enough to remove, take apart, and fix? Actually I do know what they look like and where they are, I'm just not too confident in my ability to take them off and fix them. Any more advice would help. Also, would it be best to take it to a muffler shop and ask them to check it out?

Any ideas?
It sounds like the catalytic converter is starting to fail. Last I heard it was about $1000 per side for MB cats. The ML has two, one for each side.

haha, DIY i understand what youre saying, i apologize didnt mean to come off like i was king turd.
before doing anything, i want to make sure i am hearing you right, at certain rpm's it is making this noise, and disappears when out of that rpm range that causes the noise, correct? if this is the case read on...if not try to hit me with a more precise description so i can try to help you out.
it sounds like your not too experienced with the components involved with the ML's exhaust sytem. trust me on this, the ml's exhaust sytem is pretty damn complex. I think the best think for you to do is take it to a REAL exhaust specialist, not meineke or midas...a specialist. all you have to do is tell them "i believe the ceramic monolith inside of either my resonator or catalytic converter has broken up, and was hoping to isolate whether that was the issue." and if they do find this to be the problem it should not cost you anymore than $100 to $150, including diagnostic time. it is a very simple spotweld for a professional.
good luck with it, if i can be any help let me know.
OH! and for everyone including AndyFracica, because a cat fails doesnt mean that you necessarily have to replace it. it can be repaired, and at worst case can be made to do nothing...but still pass inspection. trust me on this one.
