I am in the market for a used ML 2000 - 2001 model and would like to know how they are holding up with the higher mileage owners. Of course I prefer the 430 but budget restrictions should put me in a 320. Thanks
I've got 91k on a 1998 ML 320, I bought it used in November.
Its been in the shop once, for the a broken driveshaft bearing that left me stranded on the expressway.
As a prospective buyer you'll hear a lot of complaints about the reliability of these trucks. My advice is to buy the newest one you can afford and go with the extended warranty, preferably buy a Starmarked one from a MB dealer.
Personally, I love my truck and don't regret my decision.
About 3 mos ago I ran into the guy who purchased my 98 after I traded it at the dealership. He had at that time about 175000 miles on it (I traded it with 40000). Said its used in his business and personally, does sometimes 2 round trips per day from Phila to NYC. In addition hes had it on vacation once to Alaska and another to the West coast. He told me its been dealer serviced since he bought it and has had but one problem other than normal routine maint. That problem was replacement of the transfer case at 125000 miles due to "noise and roughness". His take on dealer maint with a high mileage vehicle was that the older it is the more important it is and that his overall maint costs were very reasonable and that he had tried a non authorized shop that works on MB's exclusivly with his last MB, an older E class and that his reliability was up and his overall costs were down since reverting to the dealership.
Ive purchase mine in Aug 03 with 65k, right now 76k, the car is in great shape, went to shop 2 times, (1) replace the emission pump (?) and (2) a transmission fluid leak, after fixed both is running well. Ive make a Service B and new brakes. I am really enjoying my ML.

I'm Curious here too: How's the sealed tranny holding with these high
mileage MLs?? Do you folks with over 50K have any problems with the transmission? have you changed the tranny fluid? has anyone gone over 100K with original tranny fluid? Lots of questions, I know, but I need to know. Thanks.
