Reason: update
Purchased in 2004, and only major maint was the transfer case. Minor maint's in comparison are egr valve, ac flaps, and just recently catalytic converter is rattling.
2000 ML-430, minor issues only, just replaced the battery, 71K miles.
9K miles per year, for 8 years, should have minimal problems only.

1998 ML320 with 188000 miles on it. I'm the second owner, bought it with 70000 miles. Always had full synthetic oil, changed every 10000 miles.
never changed trans fluid
new bilstein shocks
e-box fan
oversize tires 285-75-16
raised 16" of clearance
very trouble free.

2002 ML500 Sport 97000, only had to replace the alternator at 80K, several sets of brake pads and tires. No other problems.. Has been on the sand in the outer banks of NC, the beaches of cape cod, a foot of snow in West Va., and regularly tows a 4500 LB boat and trailer! Love it....
The 1998 ML 320 has 138,000 miles - now driven by college son; my 2007 ML has 17,500 miles. Still prefer the 1998 for its peppy ride - seems less of a bull of a truck than my current ride. Tip: a new set of Michelins makes the older MLs really comfortable
New Cross-drilled rotors and reduced dust pads, replaced pads twice
new Bilstien shocks all 4 corners
4th set of tires
Oil changes every 10,000 as recommended
Transfer case fluid change twice
replaced front windshield due to rocks (had this one done by a shop)
Replaced Cam Timing sensor
As you can see, nothing real big. I am very happy with it and recommend it to anyone. I use it in many applications, long freeway drives, short in-town trips, deep off road backcountry in the Sierras, Snow driving in the Winter over Donner Summit.
