I replaced the fronts on my MY99 in a little over an hour. One large bottom bolt and one top nut. The battery side can be replaced simply by jacking up the car. The drivers side might require removal of the wheel well shield to gain clearance to the top nut: depends on your tools and dexterity. I think you need a 10 mm Allen wrench to hold the top shaft while tighening the nut. The bottom bolt is quite large and I used a spark plug socket to remove it after soaking with WD40.

Fronts shocks are easy, and a very large wrench extension makes the top nut removal a lot easier.
The rear ones are a pain and a bit tricky, and you better get the MB special wrench tool to remove the 3 nuts the hold the read upper portion of the shock. First, though, you need to remove a small plastic cover on top of the rear shock that covers the three nuts. You can use a small and thin screw driver for that.
To remove the rear ones, the mechanic lifted my ML at around shoulder height in order to get his hand in the small space available to remove the top nuts. Not much space up their.
