I was just listening to 1010 radio where an American car expert gave a summing-up of the state of the industry.
1. He blasted Mercedes for being at their worst quality point ever. Mercedes-Benz is now way below Japanese and even other European car makers, he said. Very depressing - basically he said the emperor has no clothes, and we'd be better off all driving Hyundais. And indeed (though only a sample of one!) my wife's Jaguar and her previous car, a Hyundai, had far fewer issues than any MB I have owned. Having said that, the ML500 has been fine.
2. While I was listening I was unpacking and cleaning the car. That BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP is so annoying. Why treat me like a baby.. if I want to listen to the radio in my garage, with the door open and the key in. can I do that in any other way than by cutting the damn beeper? I must say I am very tempted to do that, just find the wire and cut it. Where is it, anyone?
While i do love Mercedes-Benz (owning 2 and one Porsche) i feel that the quality of my 2002 ML320 is below what it should be, my truck only has 13,000 miles and already i have rattles in the back, the plastic between my doors are chipping, warping, and peeling, my side mirror lights randomly stop working, as well do all the indicators stop working when i lock the door, and nothing flashes time to time. This is not what i expected when i dished out 43k in June of 2001. My 1997 NO OPTION E320 was a Bentley compared to what i have now, it had no troubles, and the quality is what i paid for, so quiet inside, even when i closed my doors, it was nice, heavy, and quiet, while my ML320 sounds like cheap Kia when i close the door, and not to mention the extreme noise inside, im kicking myself now for not buying an X5 or the MDX.

Michael,
You can do one of two things without resorting to surgery. 1. open the passenger side door - no beeps. 2. roll down a window. [:)]
Either will work.

As a previous poster said - the radio works with the car off. It took us quite a while to find that out, and then I think it was by accident.
Ah! I think I had a reason to have the key in, but indeed since I cannot remember what that reason was, I can follow your suggestion (and the previous poster's) and leave the key out!
Almost every car I've encountered has that beep. Just remember that while most cars have the beep, most also do not allow the radio to work without a key in the ignition :)

Mainly in America... in Europe none of my cars had any beeps (for key in, door open, or anything else). This is no doubt for legal reasons: this way if you sue the manufacturer after you leave in the key and the car gets into gear and runs over granny, they can say "but the car warned you". :)
I've always found the beeps annoying. When I fly a plane I do not mind the stall warning and the gear up beeps, but there they really serve a purpose...
You are right about the radio on without key, of course.

In the older cars the beeping or buzzing was handy because you could just push the button and lock the doors. But now with the remote control locking it is kind of tough to lock your keys in the car. Unless a person is the type to regularly leaves their keys in the car. In which case the buzzer won't help them anyway.[8)]
