2002 Bi-Xenon retrofit (again)

Hi, everyone

First of all, thanks to Wolfgang for the wiring diagram [http://www.whnet.com/4x4/bixenon.txt] - this really explains things well. So, all the magic electronic wizardry is contained in the headlamp units. Nice!

Now, before taking a deep breath and ordering for nearly US$ 2K worth of headlights, the only things remaining to be checked are the 'old' pinouts (vehicle side) - easy, and the 'new' ones (this will be tricky - even my otherwise friendly dealer will probably not bee too keen on me messing around with a multimeter in the showroom - maybe someone has better connections and can help out???).

On the 2002 model I checked earlier this week, I noted that the wiring leading to the headlights seemed quite a bit thinner than on my 2001 model. Is this because the power draw of the Bi-Xenons is lower, or is this a case of 'cost optimization'??

Drive safely,
Birger, the pinouts for the '02 headlamps are different. Not only this, but there is an extra wire now. This is what we're waiting for right now, for the adaptors to be constructed; BTW, how crucial are the city lamps to you?

Re: 2002 Bi-Xenon retrofit (again)

Hi, Andrew

Ahemm - maybe I misinterpreted the diagram. As I saw it, this is the scheme of the 2002 headlights 'power' section. I guess the 5W 'city lights' have a separate wire leading out to the common plug. On the 2002 model I checked at the dealer's, I also noted that there were more wires at the plug than on my 2001 model. But I didn't get around to check wheter all pins in the connector were effectively connected.

Yes, I'd say that the 'city lights' are pretty essential - otherwise the car will be totally illegal over here. But again, this doesn't seem to be a problem from what I see of the diagram.

Have a nice day!

Birger

Hi Birger,

There is actually only one more plug for '02 (at least for the US models). Your E-code lamps may have one or two more extras.

I can tell you for a fact that the '02 lamps have a separate pinout and wire for the 'Standlicht'. The ground is shared with another, you don't have to worry about it as much. If you could snap a picture of the connector at the back of your lamp, as well as the plug itself and send it to me, that would be helpful.
