Soft close doors on a 97 S320

Hey everyone,

I think I have a problem with the soft close doors for the doors to actually close themselves I would have to close the doors very softly and then it would pull itself tight. But I'm sure I recall at a Merc show room I closed the door quite hard and it stopped the door about 1cm and then pulled itself shut.

So does anyone think I have a problem?Thing is I have bought the car from a garage who give a 3 month parts and labout warranty.

P.s the boor lid works fine, even when it is closed hard.

If anyone knows about this matter I would be grateful if you could advice me.

Thanx

Yohan

Closing assist

The pump is triggered by a microswitch, when the door is closed to the first latch, which should be a very soft close. The pump then pulls in the door untill it senses it fully closed, another microswitch. If you look, you will notice the doors and trunk close and then so slightly come back (relax)as the pump shuts off. You also should hear a hiss in the trunk as the vacum is bled off at the end of the cycle.
If the doors or trunk dont pull in, pulling the fuses in the trunk can temporarily fix it. You can start saving for a pump (over the drivers side rear wheel, next to the gas tank)remove both liners its not under the rear seat! That pump controls other things like locking, lumbar, etc!

Dear Peter,

Thanx a lot for the advice on the closing aid, but I am sure I was closing the door on an S500 and the door was shut quite hard and it stopped itself and then continued to close itself, where as with my S320 I have to shut it to its 1st latch and then it pulls itself in. Plus if the doors are not closed using the closing aid they don’t seem to shut tight and in line with the other doors on the car…..sounds strange but its true

Cheers

Yohan

Closing aid

If you close the doors hard it bypasses the closing aid system, because it closes the second switch, and the system wont start. I sometimes go to a car wash and they slam the trunk or door and the system wont activate.

Hi Pete, I think your right because the soft close doesnt activate if the doors are slammed. I bought ut up because I am sure sometime ago in a show room in England I slammed the door of an S-class and the door was stopped about 10mm from fully closed and then slowly returned back to a fully closed state. I guess its must have been my imagination

Thanx for your quick reply
