Personally, I would skip the 3.5L Desiel on W140

As there are many problems with the 3.5L Desiel, I would skip Desiel powered W140s, and go for 3.2L gas engines.
Neverthless, when new, 300SD runs great and quiet(by desiel standard), good on gas for a W140.
Andy Kuo
Re: 300SD

The family car for a few years was a 1993 300SD. The car itself was outstanding and the engine power was amazing. However, if the engine isn't well maintained (especially the turbo) and the timing belts changed when required, you are talking about an expensive repair bill. The timing belt blew in 1998 and it required a partial rebuild and a couple months in the shop. Never ran the same. The 3.2 gas is a good engine, however, it is prone to gasket leaks, so check for that.

: Any one have any experience with the 3.5 liter turbodiesel?

: Any one have any experience with the 3.5 liter turbodiesel?

I,ve had a 92 300sd since '96. I purchased it with 69K. The engine was replaced by Mb at 60K because of excessive oil consumption. It now has 140K on it and has been relatively trouble free.
I'm DIY person. It started to run a little hot which I solved by installing a new radiator. The heater/ac blower failed. I replaced the blower with a rebult one. All other maintenence has been routine, brakes, oil chg(2500),fuel and air filters, etc. .
Harry Hughes
93 300d,92 300sd
