Hi There,

I've recently "inherited" a 99 s600 and very excited to "restore it"

Known issues are:

  • rear headrests don't go up and down
  • passenger side seat control illumination doesn't work
  • left 2 thumbwheels for dash vents don't illuminate
  • Auto climate control doesn't work on either side (replace control unit?)
  • auto trunk release works intermittently from remote and interior button
  • Leather seats need some restoration in the front, especially the driver's side
  • sunroof works, but theres leaves and debris (in the roof behind it) that prevent proper function

If anyone can point me to some threads for possible fixes or clue me in to the time and labor involved, i'd be most appreciative.

Thanks and nice to meet you!

Rob

Search on this forum works very well. Most of your topics have been answered many times. Check the stickies at the top of the forum for written and photo DIYs. Also check v12uberalles.org for s600 specific issues.
As far as the sunroof goes, this thread goes through it in detail:
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1610502
The first few posts cover disassembly, cleaning, greasing and reassembly with detailed photos. The last few pages cover cleaning of the center drive rail, and getting rid of the roof insulation that falls down blocking the center drive rail on sedans.

Thanks! I've been searching like mad, but maybe not using the best or correct terminology. Appreciate the response, links, and suggestions!

Rob,

I will get you kinda close...

A) both headrest, or just one?

B) I will try to find the correct way for you remove the switch panel without breaking the retainer clips, so you change the bulb..

C) Same thing here.. A bulb burned out, and to get to the dials is a cover plate is at the top left corner when you close the glove box door. One pry's the cover off, and a Philips screw is a exposed, and from there I just cannot remember, but it is kinda obvious...

D) The buttons pop off with butter knife, and behind the black button is light gray square plunger that actuates the electronic switch itself. the bottom of the plunger breaks. One can fix with plastic model glue. or ABS plumbing glue . Do not use Krazy glue...

E) the trunk lock release has a delay of about 30 seconds from the time you press the remote again to open the remaining doors. My 98 does that, so I would assume your 99 does it too, but the 97 and below cars open everything when the remote is actuated once, and no delay...

F) Check these threads out...

G) The sunroof, common problem. What is happening is the sound insulation panel which looks like roofing composite shingle is falling off. You basically need to remove the sunroof and open it up, and scrape off the tar-sheet off with a wooden yard-stick, and while you are there lube up the center track. Here is how to get to it...

THANK YOU!

I will get you kinda close...

A) both headrest, or just one?

*** BOTH, BUT NOT IN SYNC WITH EACH OTHER, AND INTERMITTENT

B) I will try to find the correct way for you remove the switch panel without breaking the retainer clips, so you change the bulb..

*** THAT WOIULD BE AWESOME, TANK YOU!

C) Same thing here.. A bulb burned out, and to get to the dials is a cover plate is at the top left corner when you close the glove box door. One pry's the cover off, and a Philips screw is a exposed, and from there I just cannot remember, but it is kinda obvious...

*** ON MINE, THE WOD TRIM CURVES AROUND INTO THE GAP, AND I THINK I HAVE TO REMOVE THE LOCK, GET TO THE VENTS FROM BEHIND, GET THOSE OUT AND THEN HET TO THE BULBS...

D) The buttons pop off with butter knife, and behind the black button is light gray square plunger that actuates the electronic switch itself. the bottom of the plunger breaks. One can fix with plastic model glue. or ABS plumbing glue . Do not use Krazy glue...

*** GREAT TO KNOW! LIKELY THIS WILL BE MY NEXT PROJECT. GETING THE UNIT OUT IS EASY ENOUGH, I JUST NEED TO BE SUPER CAREFUL WITH SEPARATING THE BUTTONS (I'VE BEEN TOLD)

E) the trunk lock release has a delay of about 30 seconds from the time you press the remote again to open the remaining doors. My 98 does that, so I would assume your 99 does it too, but the 97 and below cars open everything when the remote is actuated once, and no delay...

*** I CAN HEAR STUFF HAPPENING MY NO OPENING, SAME FROM REMOTE AND DASH BUTTON
