Within the last couple of days, there were at least two threads on "mystery" parts. Those questions were quickly answered.
I hope someone knows what this is.
Have no idea how to describe it -- it is near the brake master cylinder and I became aware of it after I removed the large plastic panel extending from the filter over the blower assembly on the passenger side to the brake master cylinder on the driver side.
EDIT: Here are three pictures showing the pointy part. Where does it attach?
Steve , the pic with the Red Arrow, that part connects to the bottom of the underside of the firewall plastic cover, you should see a small hole were it fits into .
The other one i'm not sure but could be brake master cylinder breeding hose .
Found an old pic of mine ,look for the hole near where I added the green X .

Hi Chris:
In post #1, I showed the VERY SAME part -- the pointy thing -- on all pictures. On one picture, where I've highlighted the wiring, you see the round thngy that looks like a plug.
This is NOT what I am asking -- I know what it is and where it goes.
Please see that attached.
The hole in the plastic cover is for this gizmo, which is a thermal switch of a kind.
Thanks for the help but unfortunately the question is still open, anyone?
the part in the picture is OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE SENSOR for HVAC system. Air conditioning (heating) algorithm must know outside air temperature. this sensor provides data.
another outside air temperature sensor is on a bumper but it serves only to inform driver about outside air temperature. no other systems work with data output from this sensor.
Thanks Samo, I find it strange that it is just dangling and NOT attached to anything.
I doubt it that MB engineers just left it there.
The one in the bumper is snugly secured
Do you have any pictures from your car that you can post?
Mine plugs into a rectangular hole in the end of the duct that is just above the thermal switch thingy. .... I think the thermal switch thingy might be the whindshield heating valve.
Fantastic. Many thanks!
Your image confirmed my suspicion that a PO was there.
Note that on the 600SEC, the plastic trim covers everything, including the reservoir on top of the brake master cylinder. Yours is much shorter.
Therefore, this sensor plugs horizontal, as does the thermal switch for the washer fluid -- yours is mounted sideways, but mine is vertical -- it comes from underneath the plastic panel, as pictured here:
I've checked all plastic and cannot find evidence for empty holes or missing/broken plastic tabs where this sensor could be attached.
Steve, my sensor is not mounted like wwii's. I did a picture with things assembled but you cannot see anything useful from the picture. Listen. it is simple as a raw bean. So there is hole for this sensor ca 5 cm on right from the "thing". The "thing" is thermo valve for coolant which heats windshield when cold outside. You wrote above that you know what "thing" is. So temperature sensor is 5 cm on right (towards passenger side) at the same level and at same distance from windshield as "thing" is. Sensor lies at small angle to horizontal axis so it points towards sky (slightly) and towards right fender of the car. You cannot miss now. I hope i did my homework .
oh, i can see above that you actually located place for your sensor. it is a right location. however position is not horizontal, neither vertical. it is more horizontal, but not completely. there is just a hole in plastic.
wwii's last picture is exactly what i have. i assume you too, Steve. One can see from the picture that sensor is under ca 45 degrees angle. maybe it really is and i saw wrong through limited space between the plastic and brake fluid reservoir. i thought it under ca 20 degrees ...
Thank you @wwii and Samo.
Exactly what the doctor ordered. However, it is never simple, not on my car at least.
Upon careful inspection of the plastic trim cover, I found and must report back that the hole was apparently "fixed" at some point. Whatever it was, it now appears round and is covered with a snap-in plug. Looks very "real"
I noticed that the windshield is not original and must have been replaced. Probably the shop that did the work yanked the sensor and broke the plastic. They must have drilled the plastic and plugged the hole, leaving the sensor to live free in that jungle of hoses and wires.
I have to options at this point -- reverse engineer the rectangular hole in the plastic cover or leave it the way it is.
i think the sensor must be in the air duct, otherwise it senses air temperature affected by engine heat. maybe i am wrong and current location is well isolated from the engine ... you can check.
You sure it was freon and not antifreeze? Freon leak would kill AC, not overheat engine. If antifreeze, do a search in this forum for "heater tee". Very common for them to fail.
I see that this is your 1st post on BW. Welcome! And, may I suggest:
- Update your profile
- Take a moment and introduce yourself. The forum admins have created a topic just for this purpose.
Now, as mentioned already, A/C probably is not responsible for the overheating issues you're experiencing after that "poof".
I am not familiar with your model, but doubt it very much that there are any A/C lines behind the engine. However, there are multiple metal tubes and rubber hoses that transport coolant (antifreeze) and one of them could be leaking. The exhaust is not too far away, and the liquid could be evaporating at the hot surface of the downpipes, creating a plume.
The infamous heater tee will be my #1 suspect, as suggested by jal1224. Tons of information in the archives.
Let me ask you one more question -- have you checked the coolant level in the reservoir? Leak from the heater tee will result in a tremendous loss of coolant over a short period of time. The reservoir will be empty only after a minute if this happened.
The v12 is the second picture. And again, what car do you have? This may help others in the future.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
