I just looked in Autotrader.com for you. Searching nationwide, there was one 600 coupe but no 500's. I would keep looking at Autotrader. I think when it costs a little to advertise you get a better class of people and cars. I found my mint '97 CL600 there. Also listed were two CL600's in Scottsdale that I looked at. Later when I went back to that seller, they were both gone, picked up by a collector. The only difference between the 500's and 600's is gas mileage and power. I've owned them both.
Good luck,

TJO, Yes I have a '97 CL600 with only 46K when I bought it a year ago. It belonged to a billionaire who also had an Aston Martin and a half million dollar Porsche. The poor Mercedes (only costs $145K) sat in a garage most of the time. I turned it down the first time because it had 20" Lorinser wheels but then the seller dropped the price to $9K and I bought it. After I got it home I went to MB and bought a bottle of touch up paint only to find no dings anywhere! The manual and other things in the glove box were still in their original wrappers. A true garage queen! I was also concerned because the car was black and I live in the second hottest place in the US (Death Valley is the hottest) but I haven't noticed much difference. Besides every other car here in the desert is black. Go figure!
While I went to pick this coupe, I left my '97 Cl500 with my indie. He SOLD it while I was gone for $6200. It had about 150K on the speedo. Had little trouble with the CL500 either. Changed oil tubes, the "tee" and other piddling things but nothing major. The other problem I never really solved was the window drop feature on the CL500. The CL600 works perfectly.
Good luck,
Anziani
I just made it home to Albuquerque from Phoenix driving back my new to me 96 S420. I was shopping for a w140 as a replacement for a much loved, but rather ugly 96 S500 that suffered an unfortunate cascade of bad events beginning with a failure of an 18 month old firewall heater tee (Thanks loads Uroparts) and culminated with a blown head gasket.
Phoenix Craigslist shows a enthusiast owned 96 S500 couple that looks really good in the pics. The leather on the drivers seat looks a bit worn, but the rest is gorgeous. Split rear seating. Black with gray interior. It looks like a leather replacement on the drivers seat would make for an exceptionally clean coupe, not as nice as Anzianis certainly, but maybe 1/3 the price. (what is 1/3 of priceless?) No affiliation.
I really wanted to go look at it, but didnt have the time. I was really shopping for a sedan at a much lower price point. I did look at a 99 S600, which was my first real exposure to the v12 monarchs, but I thought it had too many little issues for me to track down and get right.
My new 420 has a non functional blower and gremlin possessed side mirrors, but I think I can deal with those. What did worry me the most was the occasional hiccup while driving where it seemed to cut out for a brief instant and then come back. It didnt do that when I test drove it. First thought is cps or coil pack hiccups. Seems like one coil pack wouldnt feel quite that drastic for such a short failure, unless it was causing a total ignition event. Any ideas on that one?
If someone can point me to a thread on rewiring the mirrors i'd appreciate it.

Mike in Abq, There is a fellow on this forum who rewired my drivers side mirror on my previous CL500. His name is Harut and I have his email address if you want to contact him. It took about an hour and was NOT an easy task. Mercedes used 20-22ga wires and the constant flexing did them in. On my new to me CL600, the PO left the mirror slightly retracted and eventually the gasket is shot. I don't think he ever knew the mirror was not fully opened. Since I'm not a fan of car washes I don't fool with the fold back feature and after getting the mirrors set for me I don't see any reason to work with the adjustment. Victor in Brooklyn cautioned us not to leave the mirrors folded back as someone undid the three now exposed screws and stole his mirrors. They are about $800$ each to replace.

I am located in Redmond WA and have a minty 1996 S500 Coupe. Right now it is in the shop to fit backup camera and proximity sensors. Car has been maintained regardless of cost. Immaculate paint, in black on black. 100K miles. If this interests you please let me know and I will send photos.
