My friend has a 1995 s500 with 130k miles recently won't go revers drives fine just wont go to revers. When I put the shit to revers feels like the emergency break is on. Did anyone have the same problem or have any idea what could it be?
I haven't got it checked yet.. please help
This happened to me with my 400E several years ago. I had been driving the car on several errands that day and everything was just fine. Then, went to back out of the driveway and not an inch of movement. It just bound up. Forward was perfect as always.
I just had a new transmission installed and moved on.
Yeah, these transmissions are known to lose the reverse gear. It just happens.
There are members here with a lot of transmission knowledge who can elaborate, but long story short is that the transmission needs to either be rebuilt or replaced.
Was it slow going into reverse before the failure? It's likely that it's a failed reverse piston seal, which is both a cheap part and easy to repair, once you take the transmission out that is. It's about six labor hours to remove and replace the transmission so most people do a complete overhaul.
Agree
Replacing the failed piston component(s) requires that the transmission is pulled and dismantled so it makes sense to just overhaul the whole unit. Eventually the rest will fail which means -- it will have to be pulled again. :eek
Been there done that at the same mileage. I drove for a year with no reverse, but like others have said. You probably need a entire overhaul, or you can rebuild it your self like some have done it here.
If your interested on doing a rebuild your self, it can be done as others have done it.
Thank you fellas I'll let him know what you guys said.. most likely his gonna rebuild the transmission here in LA it's gonna cost him about $2000 so he might have the wait a little to get the funds, but thanks again
