My interior mirror looks like it's just came back from a warzone and since junkyards can't help me out in finding one, I was wondering what's so special about a manually adjustable, auto-dimming 1997 S class mirror.
This is what my mirror looks like (unfortunately I don't have a story for it, I got the car with this mirror):
Do they all really differ that much, that I won't be able to get a different one off a ball joint and use it on mine? Even the W210 E class' mirror looks the same to me:
I did take a look at their ebay page and it's kind of expensive, especially if I add shipping costs too. I could get those parts brand new from MB for that price.
Anyone here know if the W210 mirror I linked would work on my W140?
Thank you. What if I used a manually adjustable interior mirror from another W140. For some reason junkyard dealers kept asking what year model my car was and all that. Were they all fixed on the same ball joint?
I've got a guy that I've been getting parts from for my '99 s320 and he's got a ton of cars to pull parts from. PM me your info and exactly what you're looking for and I'll see about getting you a good price on a mirror assembly.
Thom_7, I have the same year MB and out of no where my mirror mount broke. There is a fellow in Santa Barbara, CA that repaired mine and did an excellent job. Unfortunately you are no where close. If you buy another from eBay , you will probably end up with a another broken one. The Germans really screwed up on the mounting method for the mirror glass. Too flimsy and too cheap. I believe there are a couple of posts here that show different methods for repair. There were youTube videos also but they may have been pulled. You would be better off if you considered a repair of your own mirror.

Did you separate the front bezel from the back 'clam-shell' when you took the mirror out of the car?
The plate with the ball joint going to the upper mount of the mirror is not present in your pictures and the only way that can 'get out' is by separating the bezel from the back 'clam-shell'.
It looks like your front bezel has cracks. it also looks like your mirror has holes in the silver on the glass.
If the silver has problems, then you will need another mirror.
Most of these had garage door opener & auto-dimming electronics also in that housing.
Yes, the mirror's plastic part was already cracked and broken, so what I did was remove the rear part of the mirror and took it off the ball joint. Basically what I have in the car is a bare ball joint and a connector for the mirror's electric part. Unfortunately I don't know if I have a garage door opener (probably not), but I believe my mirror did have an auto-dimming feature (since there's all that black liquid looking thing). I got the car with the exact same mirror you see in the first post, so I never had any chance to test if they were auto-dimming or not. Also you might not be able to see it, but there's a small circular hole in the mirror itself, and that one looks like it came like that from the factory (I thought there was a led light behind it, but I have no idea what's in there tbh).
Also yeah I completely agree, this mirror belongs in a trashcan, so I definitely have to buy a new one.
Sgt. Kanyo, daidnik (above) is the one that rebuilt my inside mirror. Did a great job at a reasonable price. I realize you are a half world away from us but I sure would consider sending it to "daidnik".

Sorry for double post, but anyone know if the electric W140 rear view mirror has the same ball joint as the manual one? Since most of the w140 mirrors I find are electric, I don't want to risk buying the wrong one.
I'm sure that units with or without garage door opener have the same roof mount.
I believe the ball-joint plate and the springs will also be the same as these are same as on R129.
It is better to pull the entire mirror assy from the mount at the roof than to disassemble the 'clam-shell' in the car. If you remove the plastic cover in the middle you will have access to the spring-loaded 'breakaway' joint at the roof mount.
You can pry this off with little risk of breakage. It may also be good to remove the light assy housing, but this is very easy also. Just need to pry out lamp lenses on either side with small screwdriver and with care. They just 'clip in'.
Removing the mount at top will pull the whole ball-joint plate with the mirror assy. If you get another mirror from a W140, it will be removed in this way.
On the R129, the clam-shell parts are the same, but the roof mount is different and you can't pry off at the roof mount. You must pull the mirror off by pulling hard on the plastic mirror (not good).
With mirror assy removed with roof mount, you can take apart 'clam-shell' with more care.
If you get a mirror assy to work with, I can send you pics of the last repair I did on a W140 mirror for the broken plastic spring retainers. This is the most common problem and causes mirror assy to be unstable.
