In case of transmission failure, isn't it best move to buy a new one? if i am not wrong i can see it costs ca. 3,500 EUR. Ok, it is more than rebuilded one but the difference is not huge.
So for 3,500 eur the car is on a road again for next several 100K km. that is fantastic.
hmmm .... then i will most probably pay for a rebuilt one. The guy who works on it here says it is 1,500 eur for total rebuild and labor (300 eur for transmission out and in included in this price).
i admit that i do not have courage to start a rebuild on my own. especially because transmission is fine in this moment except one small leak.
Samosali, we are lucky here in the US that we have MAVA (West Coast) and Sun Valley Transmissions that ship anywhere (Europe?) Here is their price list/info. I looked up my car "97 CL600 and a rebuilt transmission warranted 2 years (unlimited mileage) is only $2500. In my case I'd probably give the job to MAVA. However my car has only 56K on it and the transmission is as smooth as silk. rebuilt remanufactured mercedes benz automatic transmissions

Best deal is Sun Valley and Mercedes, but Mercedes may just gut-out the whole thing, and just use your old shell. They will fix it if it fails in two years-do the removing too; even though, you installed it yourself.
Now, you guys with a lot of highway driving on 722.3 where fuel is expensive. A 722.6 conversion may be practical, and cost effective. It may pay for itself in a year for everything...
well, 1,500 EUR is even less than $2,500 but of course the quality of work matters. I heard only good things about transmission guy near my place so I think I will be fine if/when i decide to rebuild it.
1) is "722.370" everything which defines my transmission?
in another words, do I need part number of my transmission if i want to find correct one (rebuilded)?
2) Were (or are) totally the same transmissions used also in another cars, like BMW, etc.?
3) what does this exactly mean: 722370 03 709778 (this is for my car; i can imagine 722370 denotes transmission type, and 709778 is a serial number, ... but what is 03?).
BMW does not use MB boxes. Some mid '80s Porsches use the 722.3 MB boxes. Later, IIRC, they switched to ZF-sourced transmissions.
Your 722.370 and my 722.362 are the same sans the torque converter and the valve body.
The internals/externals for all 722.3xx are same.
thanks Steve. the meaning of "03" in transmission denotation is still unclear to me.
According to your explanation I understand that I can search (when necessary) for 722.370 and that will be exactly the same transmission as mine is, regarding its function, and it will also pass into my car. Am I right or wrong?
Correct. If your box has a stamp with 722.370, any box with the same identification will be the same.
In fact, MB uses other codes for the 722.3xx boxes, W4A020 and W4A040.
See the attached .pdf.
There are many W4A040 transmissions that will work for you (with a minor adjustment).
Steve
PS I do not know what 03 on the identification plate means
many thanks.
I am in doubt whether to step into re-manufacturing of transmission or not. If yes, it will most probably done by an expert not by me. The car has almost 400,000 km but transmission works perfectly. It only has a small leak at front seal ring. I want to keep the car, so re-manufacturing is reasonable, however if i decide to fix every old and potentially dangerous part in this car then it is much cheaper to buy a new car, i hope this is clear .
Hi Martin
First thank you for helping me with oil choice for W140. I used Liqui Moly 10w-40 . I I even used it for the Corolla hahahahah [20w-50]. I am planing to try Futch Titan hopefully later and I will see which one my car like more . Well, for the Transmission. I heard from the Mechanical whom I fix my car in his garage that 722.3 Tran. is easier to maintain specially overhauling it against 722.6 . My transmitting is fine but if I want to replace it to 722.6 it will cost me less than 1000$. yep, there is may advantages of 722.6 as idle fuel consummation and one more gear ratio but I said F# that hahaha . I think this transmission is epic and it is available everywhere. for sure in my opinion overhauling the Transmission is better than buying another used one or re-manufactured. you don't know how the x old user was treating the transmission. Therefore, I decided to buy a genuine overhaul kit after 2 months from now maximum 3 in case my transmission fail in the future.
