Checked in with my mechanic today thinking center bearing support but mechanic checked and all is good
Mechanic mentioned the only play he could find was between the two tail shafts and if that is where the clunk is coming from then I would need a whole new tail shaft
Same on my S420 Sedan but more pronounced going down hill from 3rd to 4th when coasting down hill
On my S500 Coupe it seem less pronounced but in all gear shifts only at times
very high possibility that it is a free play in differential if clunking is present ONLY in down shifting from 3rd to 2nd or from 2nd to 1st when you release the gas pedal, so at relatively low speeds. not so dangerous at all. this is confirmed by my experiences and a good MB mechanic.
if clunking is present when shifting up then i guess you have a problem or you will have it soon but I am not an expert for this area and have no experiences.
i agree to check flex discs because it is easy to do and it can be very dangerous to drive with bad ones. they should be replaced if they are bad as soon as possible. In contrast, if differential has some free play, it is not a dangerous situation and the car can be driven normally (of course if clunking is not too strong).
I also thought to have a problem with the center support bearing.
In slow speed, I would get clunks when coasting and then slightly pressing the
accelerator. I could feel that the front part of the drive shaft did have some gap
relatively to the back part of the drive shaft.
My mechanic removed the exhaust and shields to have a look at it,
and said it was "not a problem".
I guess its just a gap in the splines connecting the 2 halves, that clunks
when going from gearbox driving the wheels, to wheels driving the gearbox and v.v.
Engine and transmission and rear sub frame mounts have all been change in the last six months
Diff mounts are the only ones not changed as yet
Could be this
