I am planning to make a timing chain change on my new 1999 S500. After reading many threads and noting the problems I came up with a way put the chain in easily, I think. So I am asking for other opinions as to my method.
1. Set crank at 45 BTDC and all sprockets pinned.
2. Remove tensioner.
3. With sprockets pinned the crank should be able to turn without hitting any valves.
4. Break chain between right exhaust and intake cam.
5. Attach new chain to old.
6. Pull by hand chain in clockwise direction with chain off the sprockets.
7. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to transfer chain from right side to left side. Pull loose chain on right side up and over the right side edge of the engine cam shaft area to lay it down under the alternator area. Continue pulling the chain and rotating the crankshaft until the chain link holding new to old is at the right side of engine.
8. Connect ends of new chain together.
9. Lay chain on sprockets with no looseness from right exhaust to crank at 45 btdc.
10. Install chain tensioner.
11.Rotate crankshaft by hand to insure all timing marks are met.
What say you all on this procedure?
