I hope this is resolved, I have the same problem (but only the LCD, not the buttons) and my mechanic told me my only option was to replace the HVAC unit because it was basically impossible to replace the bulb.
The bulb wasn’t going in and I thought I left part of the old bulb in the socket; it broke when removing.
I jammed a small screw driver in to wedge what I thought were the remnants out, but it wasn’t budging.
I then understood that the dealer sold me the wrong bulb – slightly too large – and I put everything back, but the !@#$%^& AUTO button wasn’t working anymore! I removed the button started poking around and realized the area circled in yellow is both the bulb and the button and that I damaged it.
No idea about the LED.
Anyone know how this HVAC control unit comes out of the dash? Can the wood surrounding it be removed and the unit come out without having to dismantle the dash?
It can be removed and replaced, of course. Not sure how to do it... I'm sure someone here will chime in though. Here's another control unit if you want to replace yours:
you must dismantle the dash. however it is not a big deal. you can find instruction in this forum. you must remove the radio too. if i were you, i would just take the unit out and take it to one good electrician who is specialized for car electronics. all will be fine ! maybe you will have to buy one unit for parts.
Hi dbs600
I had the same problem as yours. The back lighting was out for a long time and didn't bother to fix it until now. You don't need to remove the unit off the dash. With the three simple tools, I popped out the AUTO button with the paper clip and used the green plier to remove the black cap which is in your photo with the orange circle. The back light bulb is inside, simply remove it with the long nose plier and install the new bulb. The Climate Control Unit LCD light is back on. See the photos, hope this helps.
Such that it’s not as clean as my original, can someone please tell me, do all of the buttons pop off the same way the AUTO button does? If so, I’d swap all buttons from my original until to this one.
Interesting comments---helpful, too. My system works perfectly and everything lights up except the two numerical temperature indicators (left and right). So, at night, I can't see what temp is set. What is the problem here? Thanks.
James
To clarify, I'm asking because I purchased the used HVAC control unit in the photo attached, which is missing the false button (fan icon), as shown. I believe that's a bulb within the area where the button should be.
This unit is not as clean as the unit in my car, and I'm wondering if I can swap over all of the buttons - to make the face of this one appear new, but before I attempt to start removing buttons, I'm wondering if the buttons are actually removable before I break anything. :
Any opinions on my problem with no temp indication lighting at night (it's fine during the daylight), but dark at night)? I'm puzzled, especially when everything else seems to work just fine. Thanks.
James
That's a weird problem, because from what I can tell, there's only one bulb that lights up the button, temp wheel, and digital display all together. It doesn't make sense for just the digital display to go dark while everything else stays lit.
Which leads me to ask if perhaps there are separate bulbs which illuminate the two temp displays? I've never gotten into the area to look, but it seems a legitimate question, especially since all the other displays are lighted. Anyone know?
James
I removed the faceplate of the controls unit, but see that it’s soldered to the unit.
I removed the screws, but can’t figure out how to dissemble the whole faceplate - to remove its rear from its front with buttons. Seems possible, however. Anything anyone can point out? Any tabs anywhere on the part to release?
Also, what are the items circled in yellow in the last picture? Also note the previously mentioned missing false button circled in green in the last picture.
I think the answer to your "yellow circle" question is in MinhBenz's earlier post. I think he says the back lighting bulb is located there.
