Early cars have 3 black hex shaped knobs on the top of each headlight. Two control vertical and horizontal alignment of the main reflector, the third controls vertical alignment of the fog light reflector. I can't remember which is which, or which way to turn them off the top of my head.
Facelift headlights also have 3, I think, but the third controls the high beam reflector instead.
Point your car at 90 degrees to a wall at night with the lights on and turn each knob with a small ratchet and see how the beams move. It is also a good idea to remove the covers and give the reflectors a bit of a jiggle while doing this, as they can get sticky when old and not move at first, then suddenly move a lot when they become unstuck.
Thanks nowhereman. Great link for a great article about headlamp adjustment. i hoped somebody knows exactly what each knob is for. i noticed those knobs but did not want to experiment with them. It seems i will have to.
When you park at the correct distance from the wall, small adjustments are quite noticeable. Just half a turn one way or the other will be enough to figure out what is what. I've tried to remember but never can and always have to test first. It's pretty obvious once you start to fiddle.
yes of course. i just hate a fact of so called "free play". It means that in practice you never finish at same point even if you have turned the knob for 1 turn clockwise and then 1 turn anticlockwise.
There isn't any free play, hence the stickiness. I think you will find it necessary to turn them back and forth a bit until it is smooth anyway. Only then was I able to feel confident that my aiming was right and that the mechanism had settled properly.
Ok, cool. I will do it in near future ... I also noticed that there are some letters at the knobs so I will try to decode them. I am almost sure they tell a function of each knob. i did not see them exactly because it was dark when I was last time discovering that area.
