Hi guys,

My W140 has been dropping into limp mode on and off for 10 months now - I've replaced all the wiring but now it seems like the ETA is finally failing.

Apparently, it's gonna cost me anywhere from 3000-4000 USD for a new one.... I don't really wanna pay that much but it seems like I have no choice if I want to keep the car.

I don't really want to ship the original throttle body to get it repaired either because I'm scared it'll go bad again...

Do you guys know a reliable source where I can get a new ETA? Thanks!

Ask this seller if the part he has there is from an SL R129 or W140 V8 5.0L ,or just ask him if it was the M119 engine it came of from ,5.0L ,The R129 SL class M 119 engine is the same as the W140's M119 .
If the 4.2L (S420) is the same as your's then i might have an idee for you .
Love the prices these mechanics shoot at you .

What you need is the :Year of your car ,Model like S500 ,Engine M119 or just the Vin chassis Number.
Now you got as follows:
Parramatta Prestige Spares @ Nrth Parramatta (they are ok)
Sydney Wide European @ condel Park ( Any W140 ,expensive)
Riverside Spares @ Moorebank ( Currently dismantling S320 )
Revesby Spares @ Revesby (had an S500 )
MB Spares @ Riverstone ( this one is good just to far away ),they used to be the once in Lakemba )
ASV European @ Villawood ( to dum to be in business but have lots of W140 parts )
Lastly ,Mercedes Spares @ Canberra ( this is a huge MB parts wrecking yard ).

When you start with the part numbers ,that's where the prices go up ,it's that or nothing ,ring the private wrecking yards & you will see you will find a good excellent used one .
When I needed parts for my S500,i only ask't if they had a W140 S500 in stock for wrecking ,if they say Yes , I be on there doorstep in 5.

Hello

Repairing usually means that your ETAs harness will be replaced. Thats it. You only have to be sure cables used are heat resistant. Rewired ETA will last as long as the throttle body internals. But if ETA internals go bad there is not much else to do. I repaired 3 20 years old ETAs - one of a CL500 and two of S600 and after that time potenciometers show no signs of wear. This thing is really a true MB quality except the wiring.
New unit can be purchased at your local MB dealership.

I would contact BBA Reman BBA reman. ABS, ecu's, throttle bodies, air mass meters, and catalytic converters They have an office in India but I didn't see anything for Asia. They did a great job for me on a ETA from a CE320. I would send them yours as it is the CORRECT part number. You can't go changing these things around.
I am just stunned at the prices in your part of the world. You are being screwed big time. I would help anyone that needs parts shipped from the USA assuming you can get them through your customs.

Beckmann's reply:

"Hello,

We actually keep that part number in stock here and it has a cost of $1,014.00. Usually when we ship a part to someone there is an additional core charge (in this case an extra $100.00) but given the great distance between us we would not charge the core so that you don't need to spend the extra money to ship it back to us.

I would guess shipping to you will be around $150.00 (we ship with UPS). If you are sure your actuator is bad then there would be no need for you to spend the time and money to ship it here.

That said if you'd prefer to send it in and have us test it first we can certainly do that. We generally have them tested within a day of arrival.

Thank you"

What do you guys think?

I've taken my car to two Mercedes specialists and they have both said "It's 100% the ETA." - I wish I knew how to diagnose problems myself but that's something for the future...

Two things should lead you to a meaningful solution;
1) Test the ETA using an 'ohmmeter' following Victor's methodology?? [Yamae's post has the link to the You-Tube video]

2) Cut a slit into the umbilical cord to see what the wires look like??

Answers to those questions should tell you what to do.

The ETA, as most of you know has the same wiring
Issues as the engine upper and lower harness.

If it's original, it should be replaced. Check the date code.

When I get home I'll post a pic of the decal and code.

There are good deals on E-bay for later production ETA's.

I was lucky enough to find one with a 09-2005 date.

Hi guys,

I had my throttle body installed last month and it drove like a dream (for a few weeks) but now the goddamned ASR light is back on and it's pretty much on the entire time - I can turn the ignition off but it'll come back within a few minutes.

The funny thing is when my mechanic drove it (32kms everyday for 4 days) - it never came on....

I took the car to my friend today (another member on here) - Perko-S500 - and he plugged it into his computer but the strange thing was no codes were stored so technically the car should be ok!

This is really weird.... Any ideas guys?

I'm taking her back to the mechanic on Monday.
