I know there are a lot of brake light threads but just wanted to put some info all in one spot regarding changing it.

First off this link to removing the knee bolster:

Brake switch part# 0015450109 Current $34.38 from Dealer or around $10 from Ebay

My ABS/ETS etc lights were on but my brake lights worked. Learned from this site to depress the pedal, then turn key on, start car with the pedal still down. If the lights stay off until the pedal was released then its the brake switch.

I took the switch apart to find one of the contacts physically broken in the switch.

the brake light switch is very common issue on all benzes. the dealer i bought one was $25 last month.

I've never found it necessary to remove the knee bolster to get to the brake switch. Just the plastic panel between the firewall and knee bolster. It would be nice if the drivers seat came out easily and we wouldn't have to be circus contortionist to get under the dash.

I thought that too regarding that panel, but wasn't sure. Dropping the knee panel isn't bad if you know the latches. I just replaced my switch by pulling both panels. No sweat this second time around. Total time I think was just over 15 mins.
