You should still have the 722.3 four speed auto transmission. This uses a Dextron III transmission fluid; I use the Mobil 1 synthetic, but the Castrol Transmax for imports is a good non-synthetic alternative, both available at AutoZone or O'Reilly's.

For MB automatic transmission (not including MB automatic transmission 722.6) use:

Castrol Dexron-III/Mercon ATF F-30341
Castrol Transmax M-22257 / 22096
Chevron ATF Dexron III F-30108 / 30159
Citgo Multi-Purpose ATF D-21571
Exxon Superflo ATF Dexron-III F-30111
Havoline ATF Mercon/Dexron-III F-30321
Pennzoil, ATF D-21380
Pennzoil, ATF F-30110
Quaker State Dexron-III/Mercon F-30161
Sunoco ATF Dexron-III/Mercon F-30176
Texaco ATF Mercon/Dexron-III F-30321
Unocal Multi-Purpose ATF D-22413 / 22431
Valvoline ATF Type D

The factory uses Fuchs for normal factory fill; Mobil 1 synthetic on AMG applications. My local dealer actually uses the Castrol Transmax in 55 gal. drums in their service bays. You can go to the dealer's parts dept. and buy the MB branded fluid...but don't be shocked by the price. I was quoted $32 per liter for the non-synthetic fluid...and you'll need 9 liters with the torque converter drain.

I'll tell you what - the new stuff (236.14 fluid) made my 722.6 upshift and downshift harsher. I put in Vavoline MaxLife ATF which is other than Shell, the closest thing that you'll get to 236.10 fluid and my shifting was smooth again

No its NOT in my head and no my fluid level was not off before the change. Also, I had previously installed a new conductor plate (speed sensor failure), pressure regulating spring and a full drain (torque converter included) with a new filter and the NEW MB BS fluid and my shifting was harsher than my old ORIGINAL fluid.

The new fluid being 100% backwards compatible is BS. Folks in the W210 forum (which is the AUTHORITY on the 722.6) seem to think the same. Even G-AMG knows that the new fluid is BS and it had an effect on his shifting...

Out of all the 722.6 transmission service's I've done, which is at least
100, I've never had one shift hard with the 236.14 fluid.

It's also in my 722.3 trans and shifting is flawless.

What I said was the fluid used in the 722.3 transmissions (Dextron III) is NOT the same as used in the 722.6 transmissions. That is FACT. Can you use the newer ATF 3353 fluid in the older 722.3 transmissions...yes...but WHY??? It's like OVER FIVE TIMES THE PRICE and provides no better service!!!

Get your facts straight, sir.
