Today i installe'd the rear view flip up/down camera , i decided to take just a few pics for you guys of the process ,at the end of this long post there is a video as well showing how it works beeing mounted in front of the rearview mirror ,lol.
I'm sure most of you guys know how to take the panels of that have to come of to hide the wires . All pictures are number'd in order if they should load up on your PC the wrong way just in case .
========================================================
1st of all take the rear bench seat out by sliding the red lip shown on both sides, pull up and the seat comes off .

2nd look at the lower edge behind or near the seatbelt bolt, there is a bolt that you take out one on each side and 1 in the centre ,bolt spanner/socket tool is size10 , taking those 3 bolts out will make the rear bench movable forward a bit .

3rd taking of the entry step ,they pull up by pulling them up from the inside out then on the sides ,they are only klipp't in ,start on the front facing edge, dont get hurt as they could be a little bit hard to take of if it has never been done before .

4th slide the seat forward a bit so the 2 scews that hold the seatbelt cover comes loose ,dont take it off ,its only to slide a small wire under there ,if you take it off it probably will be verry difficult to put back in place .

5th,now move to the front and take the entry step off as well ,same procedure like the back step , while you there take the doorstripp off on the edge just a little ,past the dashboard is inaf then take the footrest out down the bottom ,that also is just klipp't in and easily pull's out towards the middle console .

Now go to the back seat and place the extension rod that you used to undo the seatbelt srews and place that forcing it to hold the rearseat a bit forward like shown in the last 2 pictures ,just a little gap is enough ,all you need that for is so you can see the torch light on the other side to feed the wire trough ,thats all.

You should have a gap at the back seat like shown here in the 1st picture ,place a torch in there (turn it on) so you can see the light from the back behind the AMP , if you look close you can see the torch wich way she is facing ,towards the outer edge .

Next we go to the Trunk/boot i forgot to take pics of how to take the side panel off but that only pulls out as well ,its best if you get one of those electrical wire feeders shown here in the yellow coloured bar, stick this hard flexible plastic feeder bar into the direction of the light there is a hole just behind the AMP up there ,same procedure like when installing the new aftermarket radio ,once you got the bar trough to the other side beeing carefull not to disturb anything there go to the inside of the car ,ther you should see the yellow bar again (lol) , now feed the wire from the front were the camera will be mounted all along the bottom steps etc make sure its all nice and neat ,nothing is touching any sharp edged metal .In the pic below with the step removed you can see the blu amp cable from my radio .

When you feed the wire trough the back near where the seatbelt is , make sure you fit and pass the wire under the black plastc edge as the seat will sit on top of it if you dont .
Tape them all up onto the yellow bar and pull the wire out from the back .

Just pull enough of the wire out the trunk that you need , then go to the front of the car ( passenger seat ) unklipp the left hand side sunvisor cover ,little screwdriver will do the trick there , under that cover there are 2 screws take them out 1st ,once out, unklipp the visor completely from the right hook (there are no wires ), to undo the little flap that hides the right hand side sunvisor klipp you can use a small size Allen key to push the flap out undamaged from the top of it ,just push it down from the top ,now you have acsess to it and take it out ,place the screws onto the clovebox open'd compartment .
Now pull out the side window covering decoration on the edge ,it pulls out towards the front and going sideways a bit .
Get the wire for the camera and measure it ,the wires beginning should be just in front of your seat ,pull it up trought the metal sleeves/klipp's like shown all the way , once you reach the top ,there is a cutting edge metal (see pic) that holds the side edge window decorating strip ,make sure you pass behind that ,a quarter of the sunvisor section can move a little bit just inaf to feed a wire trough there, feed the measured wire trough that gap .
Once you done that you can start closing and putting stuff back ,go in reverse from here on .Dont forget to clean the aerea where the cameras goes onto to, clean it a bit with MS Spirits ,otherwise it will fall off in the long run time.

Now for the easy part ,the Wire connection ,just go to the nearest electrician and get him to fit it ,lol.

Its pretty easy .
You got the brains box ,choose a location for it so you can tighten all the wires ,go by the specification of the instruction manual that came with your camera/sensors kit ,on mine it was yellow for reverse light / black earth and red for power ,the Yellow reverse wire from the camera only gets connected to the rear light connector with the colour yellow & grey ( thats the reverse light ) , there is a little hole already drilled on the side there for the earth black wire , Power ,use the one on top of the tuner with the red wire already there ,it is constant active power with ignition on .
The plug i'm holding shows you wich slot the yellow camera wire goes into if your colours are faded ,it's the hole with the 2 wires in it ,bottom right above the empty slot.
Now its time for the Sensors and drilling wich i havn't done yet ,i'm not keen enough to just drill 5 holes into the bumper without having any touchup paint to hide those sensors black colour, this will be next .
In the meantime all the wires are hanging there on the edge for the sensors and the camera is underneath the rear light ,the 4 sensors are disconnected as they make one hell of a noise .
That is the part i dont like ,using the Hole Saw other than that it is pretty straight forward from here on .
========================================================
In the final pic ,thats how it looks for now in the back there ,as if nothing happend ,lol.

Here are the Sensors install'd , i avoided the 3 metal bars behind the bumperbar even that for the sensors it would have been a more equall look by drilling right over the top of those bars ,it's best not to i guess .
Measuring the holes was the worst part of them all , making sure they are exactly the same hight and width from the top/bottom and left/right edges ,look at the result ,nice even and straight as .
The wiring is hidden behind the bars as there is about a good inch of space between the metal bars & the outer plastic form the bumper, the foam is easily cut into as well to make space for the wires ,no damage done nowhere .
Passing the wires into the boot is by going true the side bottom airvent on 1 side ,i prefer'd not to drill any holes into the chassis .
I ran out of black isolating tape thats why the white one, cant be seen anyway .
If anyone should attempt this make sure before cutting to test the HoleSaw on some plastic or so , the camera saw was smaller than the sensors saw ,make sure to check that ,Sensors saw was 23,8 mm while the Camera saw was 18,4 mm .

Nice. I though about doing this too, but after awhile of searching I thought a wireless backup camera would be easiest to install. Haven't found one yet... Maybe Someone here has some details about this? I heard they're pretty damn reliable.

#9 · (Edited)
I had a wireless camera before & they are reliable the only downside with the wireless once is that on the screen you get lines wich are anoying and when the camera gets wet its game over , i didnt find it to be as good as the wired one ,a wired one has a much more clearer picture and the sensors are more precise plus on the screen you get to have the little markings and meters objects behind plus the anoying beep beep that changes tone as you reverse into something this Cam here actually tells me to STOP with a verry powerfull tone , i'm sure some cameras with sensors offer this to but are they precise ? ! .
Personally i never ever tought i would do this little installation into the car ,well i did and m verry happy of the outcome so far .Even the camera mounting position ,looks like the car came out with it from the factory due to the colourmatch & she looks quality ,lol .
Ciao
BTW: It looks like a big job to do this looking at the pictures here but it really isn't that bad ,took about 2 hours .

--------------------------------------------------------HAS BEEN POSTED & UPDATED ON THE 1ST PAGE .----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will be done in the 2nd part once i got the touch up paint for the bumper cam & sensors as they are gloss black , i'm concidering to respray the whole bumperbar if it dosnt look the way it was , i'm more worried about that holesaw cutting the hole ,the surrounding paint could crack or make little splits due to the bumpers plastic made ,i never used one of those before on car paint ,i have no idee of the effect it will do to the surrounding paint of the hole it drills .
If it dosnt look good it will cost me the respray ,not to worry ,lol.
I have 2 options ,either drill my bumper or get a later model bumber ,that has the holes already there and save mine ,either way it's a respray i think ,lol.

Btw: the camera for this set looks exactly the same like the sensors themself just that it has an eye,it's not one of those cams that poke out or sit next to the numberplate etc ,i would'nt have started if it was the case .

Something like that , on my little model there are only 4 at the back ,what i dont like there is that they are sticking out to much ,it makes the rear look weird somehow , and thats on all the W140's wich have them install'd (please take no offence for owners who have them fitted ).
Look on the pic ,thats exactly what they look like .
Take a look at the camera itself compared to a lighter or batterie ,its verry small ,it will look all nice and flush back there and nothing poking out .

And here it is , the sensors need to be push't in ,i cant do that now because the touch up paint is only 1 hour old .
The 1st Page of this post is updated as well with the pictures of the drilling process . Sry for the night pics but it is dark here ,more pics tomorow .

Here is the Video of this camera ,some may say what about the light switches ,well i never use them plus the camera can be operated manualy as well so for one little click on the buttons once in a blu moon i dont think its a big deal .

Hi again, I'm so happy today. Got a whole day to search for the useful thread. I've found your DIY. The back camera is a next device to install in my W140. Sadly, your VDO isn't in YOUTUBE. Love to see how nice back view, b4 I buy. BTW, could u suggest what kind of camera I should. Attach a link here must be nice. Thx. in advance.

Yeah i know , on the manual it says that 12/15cm is enough for them beeing appart ( let them Sens each other ,lol ), were i wanted to drill thats were the metal bars are behind and on the outer edge is no good ,they look ok close up and on the monitor inside everything is spot on ,more pics when it is 100% completed .
and thanks NHZ ...

as long as the reading is correct :) like i said on mine i am going to get a shop to custom make my rear bumper plus i will tell me little secret lol i am going to get two muffler cut outs and do a quad tip amg exhaust don't tell anyone lol

forgot to mention its going to be an original AMG or Wald or Lorisnor Kit don't know which one yet

#20 · (Edited)
Doing this kind of a job at a shop would be to expensive i thing , took me ages to measure the holes before drilling ,but anyway .

:monkes:Ssssh dont worry i wont tell anyone ..:monkes:
Make sure you check how a quad exhaust looks on a W140 1st on your pc with some adobe photoshop or so ,on merc's i belive that a dual 1 left / 1 right looks better , on a W140 maybe a nice big fat oval or even sort of a square exhaust tip ,i was thinking about doing that to .

#21 ·
yeah i am going to use the new amg tips the big fat oval ones off of a g55 :) i am going to put four tips

i am no good with photoshop

to install these body shops should charge about $100 to install the sensors only without painting.

i finally found a place that does the center parts for the bumpers and fogs will be custom install.

#22 ·
That's pretty cheap , if i were to do that here i'm sure it would be somewhere around 4/500 au dollars for sure + the cam & sensors kit .
I will see if i find a pic of the exhaust for you .

LOL,is that all ,drilling the hole and putting the sensor is nothing ,it's the precise measuring that is nervewrecking ,1 mistake by just a few milimetres and it is ruined ,the centre of the bar measuring from the top were the 1st chrome joint is reads 28.5 inch for half the bumper ,thats exactly where the keylock is (centre),then go from the bottom split to the centre its 5 inch all along the bar anywhere ,from the top past the chrome it is 7 inch all along the bar again ,you decide where you want the sensors just keep in mind the metal bars ,thats why they are so close together .

You know how may cars i see around with those sensors all over the place not beeing 100% in line ,LOOKs awefull ,thats what i didnt want and took my time measuring properly .

#25 ·
well that is included too lol car modification in my area are very common and there are thousands of shops. i know one place that only specializes in the mercedes mods that guy re-did my w220 btw i am going to finally pick it up tomorrow morning :) they did a wonderful job made it look like it came from the factory :) only charging me $4000 lol they redid everything. i just have to wait for them to polish it i am guessing its going to be done tomorrow

#26 · (Edited)
Verry happy for you to hear its finally ready , dont forget to somehow sneak in some pics of the W220 ( i get shot for this ,LOL) just disguise it as a 140 lol.

#27 ·
this is a w220 body on a w140 lol. i hope its ready tomorrow all they have to do is polish if they delay it a day i just might go crazy lol did i type $4000 i meant $3000 :) slight typo. the is going to do my w140 for $2000 too that is with stripping the car and doing every single part of the car :)

I like the rear view camera on my alpine head unit. Heres an E38 with the same head unit and rear view camera like mine:

I wanna upgrade to alpine's new camera, which is a similar technology to the new BMW 7-Series:

Pretty pricey, but I'll probably do it when I get my Lorinser body kit and the car goes for repaint.

Nice cams up there Fu3lFr3nzy,trouble is that in the W140's unless you got the flipup radio with screen where would you add the screen for that unless you add it on the side of the windscreen ,that's what i dont like ,anything over the dashboard ,it just ,1st dosn't suit the 140 or mb's in general & 2 it makes the interior look messy, that is the whole reason for the flipup rear view cam ,wich is there but well i cant see it unless i go in reverse, lol.
I didnt need any cameras but i could'nt resist due to the quality item, she would have been waisted for my ute ,lol .
All i really needed to do or ad would have been the wireless cam like "Sinned420" mentioned to my exsisting flipout/up radio unfortunately i'm finish'd with anything wireless .
Thanks for posting & keep em coming .

Another option Gadjet for the rear bumper without drilling any holes would be the Parking Strip ,it is only adaptable for a plastic bumper not beeing metal ,have that in for the last 3 years or so ,it is a verry effective gadjet .All it has is a metal strip that goes all round the rear bumper on the inside of it , a brains box and a beeper speaker that beeps if there is an object or you get to close to something .
I also have the wireless cams here spare ,i probably stick 1 onto the front bumper while i'm at it ,well hidden & connect it to the radios screen just for the fun off it.

3rd pic is of wireless cams with receiver ,lol, wireless ,look't at all the wires still there .

The only thing you can do is either Print the whole threat or save the Link and take it with you were ever you may need it .I dont think there is any other way if there is it would surprise me .
Why would you want to do that anyway ,its here on Benzworld ,always, ready for when you need it ,lol .

Here is that video , it still works . Very useful little camera and matches the grey interior .
Search e'bay for "flip down rear view camera or flip up " ,use words like "pop up / popup " as well if there are no matches.
