calling all V12 coupe owners need advice on 95 S600 coupe

Hello guys i am geeting close to buying my first v12 coupe. the one i got my eye on is a 95 s600 coupe. Ihave owned a 95 s320 and have owned a 96 s320. i have herad all the horror stories about the w140 and there issues and i have to say that in my last 10 years of owning my 1995 s320 the only problem i have had is the ac go out on me. so what i need to know from you guys is how much you like your car. give me some problems that you have on your personal cars and and estimate on some regular maintence cost. i know that a lot of people say that you should buy a 96 and up but i have seen a lot of cars here in michigan with bad transmissions on those years and the cost is a ton of money to fix. i know that the wiring harness is a big issue. i know how to get to the upper but i have not been able to find any pictures on a actual car to see where the lower harness is located. also i have tried to finad sources for the harness and i have not been able to find them on the internet. i have found some on ebay but they are not for the s600. any comments on this tread would be very helpful for me i have been looking for a long time and i now have a chance but i dont want to make the wrong decission.

hi,
i've only owned my 93 s600 coupe for a year now but have had huge fun with it. have driven about 6000miles in total and it hasn't missed a beat for me in that time despite having some long standing issues that i have only just recently had funds to address.

problems:
ADS light on from purchase - body acceleration sensor at fault
left rear shock absorber failed lower bush
steering items failed: tracking out as well
all of the above cost £2354 through dealership, £670 for labour the rest was for parts only.

it's important to stress that the above items did not stop the vehicle working however it was just a tank that kept rolling.

the main problems itemised above were due to the car have been left sitting outside for over 2years before my purchase.

other issues that i fixed myself for minimal cost:
door check arm sheared (just welded the parts back on)
radio antenna failed (easy to fix)
door soft close vaccum sender (split casing)
sun roof not opening closing easy (just needed lube)
washer nozzles blocked

websites of great assistance to me:
this website and forum is awesome and there are some great people on here with outstanding knowledge.
V12 Uber Alles, Articles and Info Page
K6JRF Auto Page

these are phenomenal cars and i have not regretted my purchase, the car cost me £3000 and had 117K miles on it.

hope this helps and good luck. if you want anymore info let me know. i'm still learning stuff and there are many more that have superior knowledge on this forum but i'll gladly share more with you if it helps.

Donkshophorse: Being in the UK it makes parts and labour more expensive than here in the US, correct?

To the OP: From what I've read, it seems the coupe is basically the same as a regular W140. The V12 makes parts more expensive. BTW most people will say to buy '96+ cars. The coupe does have a few different parts however--seatbelt extenders for example. The biggest difference you will notice will be more money spent on gas and more money towards routine maintenance. You will probably have a few things to fix within the first two weeks of ownership, but with some luck you won't have anything break for a long time afterwards.

I've got a terrific 1995 S600 Coupe. I've had it for about 2-years now.

It started out as an already good example: straight body work, perfect paint, great interior condition, ok wood, perfect suede headliner. The car was owned since new by a famous, wealthy investor. I bought it from Russell & Company, arguably the number one Mercedes restoration firm in the US. Books and papers came with the car. I didn't believe I could get a better pedigree.

I drove it home and washed it. The car had sat for about 3-years (the PO had developed cancer and it sat during the time he was being treated, up until he finally succumbed) and was sent to Russell for disposition, as the family was an existing client of the firm.

It took several weekends to get to know the car, get all the nooks and crannies cleaned up (even though it was very clean to begin with, I'm fastidious), and I realized some things needed to be replaced. Both wiring harnesses needed to be replaced. I changed out the wood center console as the original was chipped. I wound up spending over 3-times what I paid for the car repairing/replacing elements of it that were needed or preferred.

Today, the car is a wonderful, fully restored coupe that looks and drives like new. With 115,000 miles on it. Not only did I get it caught up on what amounted to deferred maintenance, I took it beyond, to 'as new' or 'certified pre-owned' condition.

What's the car worth? Who cares? I'm not selling. Where my sedan is a daily driver (in the same condition as the coupe), the coupe is a weekend treat, suitable for taking my wife and I wherever we need to go and do so...fast.

A W140 is a dream car. A V-12 version? The epitome of the auto-making craft. Trust me. I know.

Go for it mate. Driving 94 500 Coupe' and 600 Sedan for many years.
When you had them, nothing even come close to them - class by itself, if you can appreciate.
As the info is now easy to come by ,like thru this forum, makes things much
easier when you have problems. Go fot it.

+ 1 - could not have said it better myself!

Now, I don't own one yet, but having driven the 1995 W140 coupe V12 Euro: it simply feels like a lear jet, utterly incomparable. You only live once. IMHO, if you can handle the ownership experience costs wise, you would be mad not to buy it - but do make sure you get it very well PPI'd.

For a thorough PPI, make sure they check wiring harness(es), AC, transmission service recs & vacuum pump for doors. Check operating temperature too when "pushing on!"

Enjoy!

MB Fahrer: not sure about being more expensive in UK for parts/labour its just what it is i guess and while I've been known to wield a spanner or two in my time i wanted the dealership to get these jobs right first time and not me meddling and spending more in the long run.

6SHARKS: i forgot to mention i did the upper harness some months ago. rebuilt it myself andf it was pretty easy providing you kept all the bits in the right place! there are a couple of threads on this forum to assit with it and great photos.

agreed with the other notices here, this is a great car and there are not many available in UK anymore not sure about US.

6SHARKS:

Attached are photos of the replacement involved of the BODY harness, the more complicated of the two. The other harness is the ENGINE harness, a job my indie did with a whole lot of whooping and hollering. I had the body harness replaced at the dealership given his frame of mind after doing the engine harness.

This body harness, in the photos below, are from the restoration of my 1992 600SEL, which shares virtually the same harness with the coupe:

The last photo, above, shows why the harnesses needed to be replaced: the insulation gets brittle with the original harnesses, made of soybean paste so as to be bio-degradeable/recyclable. The new harnesses do not have such nonsense and are designed to last normally, which is basically forever.

Below, photos of my coupe:
