Difference between Right Hand Drive (RHD) and Left Hand Drive (LHD) W140`s.

Hey comrades...

Just for interest sake, what are the difference between the RHD and LHD W140`s?

For instance: below I have two pictures of S500 engines.

Fits pic is a RHD (mine), and the second pic is a LHD. (belongs to a member of this forum)

If you notice, the Fusebox is situated near the driver side, and the module "coffin box" is situated on the opposite side.

Are there any "Specific" parts that can only fit on each version, and not compatible for the other version?

anything else?

The only difference i can see is on the top ,they are on the opposite sides other than that they look the same .The Wipers also work the other way around .The brake master cylinder must be on the other side as well with all those metal pipes beeing also inverted ,underneat the car exept for the steering mechanism i belive they are the same since the experience with the lower wiring harness i recently had .
Ciao

The brake booster is *always* on the driver side which explains the switcheroo of the fuseboxes

For Mercedes yes - they engineer their cars properly! But certainly not with some of the 'lesser' brands that I have had the misfortune to work on.

e.g. last week, I had to replace the brake switch of a friends RHD Peugeot 307. It took me a few moments to realise that the servo (booster) was on the passenger side, and the brake switch was under the dash on the passenger side. There was a bar that ran through the dash from the brake pedal to the servo on the other side!

Also, years ago, I had a friend who was into those awful AMC Pacers (of Waynes World ilk). There were apparently 43 official RHD models built and sold in the UK. When you take the dash out, there is a chain that runs from the steering wheel on the right to the steering column on the other side and a bar for the brakes. Seemed like far too much work just to sell 43 cars!

Hi,

The quirkiest thing I had RHD to LHD (maybe?) was when i replaced the blower motor with a US motor.
Need to switch wires around to make it blow into the car instead of out of it.
Could also be a defect with the blower motor, but certainly strange.

Cheers
