1999 S500 Grand edition

I have a question. Yesterday I looked at a 1999 s500 Grand edition. I determined the car was a total repaint (not high quality). The seller stated the car was the victim of hail damage. That being said my question was about the headlights. They were halogen and I wondered if they were original. I was curious if xenon lights were considered an option for a Grand Edition? I know that at least some 1999's had Xenons. It surprised me that a Grand edition would not have them as standard? risteaun

As of 1997 onwards all S500 and S600 have Xenon Headlights Standard. This car might have been in a Frontal Collision, and it was cheaper to replace the Xenon Headlights with Halogen.

That was what I suspected but was uncertain about the options. If what you say is true, and I have no reason to doubt you, I would agree with your conclusion. Why else would someone downgrade to halogens? I suppose I can check the vin for that specific car. Do you happen to know a link for running a vin number? Thanks

Is this true for US models?

When I pulled up the vin on some Russian parts site it did not list xenon lights as one of this car's options which was very surprising on a Grand edition. I don't know if this site is accurate but now I am not sure about the statement that they were standard on all S500/S600 after 97. Any other opinions?

The info posted may be true for the US market, but not necessarily for everywhere else.

I have a Japanese spec 97 S600 that has Halogens.

The easiest way to check is whether or not your car has a manual headlight height control next to main headlight switch. If it has, then it was fitted with Halogens at the factory.

Casr with factory HIDs had self levelling headlights, and hence didn't have the manual height adjustment control.

At least thats I what gather from various other threads. I had the same question when I got my car, assuming as it was a 97 it should HIDs, but it seems that isn't always the case.

I must respectfully disagree. My Grand Edition, with which I have been familiar since new has never been in any collision, has halogen headlights from the factory. Even checked the Russian site to see if something had been done. Nothing--HIDs are not listed. Mine is definitely a US car.

Thank you, so xenon was an option for the 99 S500 Grand edition. Somewhat surprising with the nomenclature it was given but there was always the flagship S600, I knew that I had seen some U.S. 97-99 S500's without xenons, but simply the "Grand" designation me think they would have been standard. Here's an amateur question, can stock xenons from one S500 but swapped into a S500 halogen?

Yes, you would also expect the Grand to have reclining rear seats but it does not. There are some weird things which were omitted on that particular model which you would have thought they would add given it's status. Still a great car thought, don't get me wrong.
