The info posted may be true for the US market, but not necessarily for everywhere else.
I have a Japanese spec 97 S600 that has Halogens.
The easiest way to check is whether or not your car has a manual headlight height control next to main headlight switch. If it has, then it was fitted with Halogens at the factory.
Casr with factory HIDs had self levelling headlights, and hence didn't have the manual height adjustment control.
At least thats I what gather from various other threads. I had the same question when I got my car, assuming as it was a 97 it should HIDs, but it seems that isn't always the case.
