1997 S320 Trunk Lid Won't Close

Hi,

I have read through a variety of posts and answers about trunk lids and most of them are focused on the automatic pump system that closes the doors and trunk lid.

I have verified that this automatic pump system works. I believe the problem is potentially one of two issues and I cannot seem to be able to solve either.

The lid closes far enough but the latch then doesn't finish closing. The issue could be:

1. The eye of latch is out of position thereby the angle coming into the latch is off to actuate the latch.

2. The actual lock is in a locked (maybe like a anti-theft position) position not allowing the latch to close.

I have not really found any writings of anyone having problems like this or closing the the lid. Most people seem to have problems opening or having issues with the pump system.

Anyone have any further thoughts on this? Thanks for any help.

.
you can confirm this by pressing the trunk open button with the trunk lid open. Are there scenarios where you can close the trunk by slamming it shut?

Check here. This might help

I've found the mechanism in the chassis likes to loosen up with age, I'd check that alignment and make sure the two bolts are tight.

How have you verified that the trunk closing actuator is getting vacuum?

I don't understand what you are saying. You'll have to describe (for me, anyway) in gory detail exactly what happens or doesn't happen when you try to close the trunk, starting with what happens when you open the trunk prior to trying to close it again.

You can see if the striker eye hits and rotates the catch mechanism in the lower latch mechanism.

Hello,

I wanted to circle back around to everyone about this problem and let you know the resolution.

After several more attempts on my own and since there was other work to be done on the car that required professional service, I included this as part of the service.

What they found was the there was an alignment problem, adjusted the trunk latch and catch positioning, replaced missing sill clips, and lubed the mechanisms.

Based on the work that was done, I certainly feel this was outside of my personal capabilities, but perhaps this will help someone else in the future.

Thanks for the comments.

Great, now that you're in my trunk, can you tighten that power antenna bolt, again?

Thanks. And, you know how the emergency trunk lock and latch sequence works....

1997 Mercedes S320 Trunk won't engage in latch

First time to post. Hope I am in the right spot.

My daughter is on the road in her Mercedes S320 1997. Of course it is a holiday weekend. Hoping for a quick fix, to get her on the road again.

The cargo net got caught, in the latch/lock, when she went to close the trunk. (not the first time it has gotten in the way ) She pulled it out, the trunk would not stay shut. Not sure about interior indicator lights being on or off.?

Vacuum pump is working fine. Trunk "latch/lock" is in an open position and will not lock or close over the top piece to keep the trunk closed.

Those two pieces are movable. Like pinchers. They can be pinched in and out but will not grab the top piece, to hold the trunk shut.

Can you really "slam" the trunk? Will it damage the vacuum? Do you wait until it is close to being shut?

Can the latch break? Someone is wanting to take a panel off and fix something that is failing to "engage" the mechanism. A friend. Not our mechanic and I am nervous.

1997 s500 trunk wont open or close

hi,

I have a 1997 s500 and just today started having an issue with the trunk,
i closed the trunk and it did not fully close all the way it stayed open about an inch or so, and wont close, i tried to open it and it wont open either i tried the with the key and with the button inside the car, the handle is sticking out and is not retracting - so now im stuck driving around with my trunck open about an inch, i checked the fuses everything seem OK and the pump sound like its working. can anyone help me with this.
anyone have any similar issues.
i want to try to figure it out rather than having to take it to a dealer.
