Transmission Fluid (how to add and check)

I have a feeling my tranny fluid is low on my 97 600 (its the 5 speed tranny) but I am curious how to check the levels (it doesnt have a dipstick) and how to add fluid (what type and brand).

Any help would be appreciated

start the car and drive for about 5-10min then stop and park do not turn off the engine(must running) then find your transmission tube, it should be behind your engine by the back wall.Thats the place that you check your oil and fill your oil up. Good luck and also you should by a dip-stick or make your own

so are you saying that I should use the SAME dipstick from the oil? Will it be the same readings (meaning is the oil dipstick the same size as a tranny dipstick)?

nooooo! the oil one is only for the engine oil!!! and its about 18-25 in. long ,but you need about 50 in. long and its fit to ALL 722.xxx trannys.(universal.) or take a flex cable about 50 in. long and make the mesurment at the and like i post on a pic.

Do not use the same dipstick. The motor oil dipstick is for the motor oil. You'll need to buy a new transmission dipstick or make your own. Or buy it off Eddie a, I'm assuming that is what he is trying to suggest.

If the previous owner never DIH(Did it himself) and there doesn't exist a dipstick, then you'll have to do the above. Also, I believe the cap is a one-time use thing, so unless you have a dipstick or something to cap it, don't check the fluid level yet. The cap that says FOR MB SHOP ONLY, I think, breaks off once you take it off.

The PO of my car did his own transmission fluid change I think, I have the transmission fluid dipstick, but I've seen those caps that break off from other posts. Hope this helps.
