rubbing noise while turning left.. problem solved.. details inside

hey everyone so i had a rubbing noise while turning left sharpley... check the wheel there was no aparent problems,, wheel bearing and ball joint were fine,,, so i found the thread about the sound dampingin material on around trans and driveshaft... turns out that this tends to sag after time.. on the left side one section of the insulation is in the shape of a square.. so this part sticks out from the rest... this piece has no support so it sags down lower than its suppose to,, when you take the sharp left turns the piece beds down from force and rubs against the driveshaft,,, thats why it only happens when turning left,,, there was aparent marks on the shaft that showed it was rubbing,,,, i tried beding the insualtion up but it just wouldnt stay,,, so i got some of the metall bracket with holes in it that comes rolled up like tape(dont know the name of it) turns out there is a crossmember brace directly under the insulation and there is a bolt stickinp up from it,,, so i bent both of the ends of the bracket 90 degreese,,, put the bolt from the cross brace in a hole on the bracket and it held the insulation up nice and tight,, after that,, i put a nut on the bolt to keep the bracket in place an then used a zip tie to secure it to a near by line to make sure it doesnt bend at all.. after all this took it on some sharp corners and no noise,,,, took some thinking but i hope its a permanant fix,,,

hope this helps many people out

o and just for everybodys information i am 17 and i did this without any help form anyone

I don't get any noises but my insulation is also rubbing.

Hi Vaser,

I have the same thing on mine s420 that you explained. When I am turning left I could hear the rubbing noise. Also when I am driving straight and pull the wheel to the left I could hear it. I checked the front wheel bearings and could not find anything wrong. I found rubbing marks on the shaft and insulation. I am going to fix this issue ASAP. It drives me nuts. Thanks again

I was able to locate the same thing. So what I did was pushing the isolation material up and noise is gone. But it may return again because that material will sag eventually. At least I know what causes that. I bought a bearing already and was about to replace it. My friends who own the auto shop were very skeptical about the isolation rubbing the shaft theory. So we lifted the car and found that it actually does rub the shaft around. The rubbing marks were visible. Os We pushed it up around. It was 5 minutes job to do. I drove back home without detecting any rubbing noise.
