Smell of burning plastic

I have a 98 S320 and have been smelling burning plastic from the front while driving. I turned off the blower to see if that had any impact and it still stunk. What could possibly be melting? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Sometimes something like a plastic bag can get blown under the car and stuck on hot engine parts of the exhaust.

First thing to do would be to inspect the engine bay and underside. Is the car running hot?

Is it there while the engine is idling? Did you have any lights on at the time? When you say that you turned off the blower, does that mean you turned it to MIN or that you turned the a/c controller off?

I guess that if it's there while idling and with the a/c off you ought to be able to narrow down the area where it's coming from.

The only time I had a 'smell' it just appeared in the car without any clear origin. I only found the source when the central locking failed - it was the motor of the PSE pump under the rear seat: the nylon plate carrying the motor's brush holders was melting/carbonising.

Good luck,

Mike

This had happen to me awhile back and the thing that was burning was my rear side light. The one that is located in the rear seat next to the rear headrest that lights up when you open the door. The wires was touching and it melted the whole light asymbly and i had to get another replacement from Eddie A. So if you are smelling it i suggest checking out all your interior bulbs where your reading lights are. Check all interior bulbs.

since you have a 320, does your car leak oil?

Mike JT,

The blower completely off. I looked at the blower near the passengers side hood hinge under the hood and could not smell it there. The headlights on or off. Smell occurs daytime or nighttime, when idling or driving. I will check the PSE pump.

hellah fresh,

Interior lights look fine.

bayhas,

No oil leak.

Is there a blower directly behind the interior center front dash vents?

I would think a fuse would blow prior to a wire or electrical connection overheating.
