Rear Electric Sunshade Issues...

Hi All,

Was wondering if any of you W140 owners in here, who has this issue with their Rear Electric Sun-Shade.

My problem is, the shade could expand all the way up without problem but when I need it down, it doesn't work ...

And, you can hear the 'gear slipping' sound (tak-tak-tak-tak), so whenever I need it down, I'll have to get someone to 'press' on the switch, and I'll have to use my hand to 'push' the 'extender' (left & right) a little bit to help it close down

Would really appreciate if there's some advice on how to get this rectified without burning a hole on my wallet. It's kinda hard to buy from eBay thou, due to size which the shipping would 'kill' me too.

PLEASE HELP!!!:crybaby2:

Been to 3 chop shop in Singapore, either don't have this part or partly not functioning. Had been thru like 4units, all of em, either can't stretch all the way up or stop in the middle of nowhere while retracting.

Thanks for the infos...:)

you need to shorten the blind.. so it does not go to full travel and to the dead zone with no teeth that is where your click is coming from .. and dont press and hold when you get it working or you will take the teeth off again...

Tried that too earlier, this 'retracting' slips does not occurred at the same point every time.

Had no choice, pulled it out and had open up the motor. Saw the 'plastic gear', and it seems like the 'tooth' is a little worn off (tip had been flaten, which means grip is much lesser, then the slips occurred), but nothing breaks anyway.

Am now getting someone to 'fabricate' the 'plastic gear' which would cost me US$100.00 / RM350.00 each to replace.

Will update with pic later and see if it works.:)

Quite a 'big' job as a matter of fact. This is what you need to remove, in order to take out the Electric Shade.

1) C Pillar Cover
2) 3rd Brake Light / First Aid Kit Compartment
3) Speaker Cover & Shelf
4) Remove the motor form the sunshade...

After taking off the speaker shelf/panel, there's screws for the Electric Sunshade which can be accessed from the 'boot' area under the speaker panel.

Here are some pix...since I had to take out the speaker panels and C Pillar Cover, I sent those covers for upholstery as well...

Hi, a bit of a variation on the theme

My motor works perfectly but the return spring on the roller blind doesn't allow the blind to retract as it should.

Anyone had any experience at resolving this?

Thank you in advance.

Any gear slippin sound...?

The 'spring within, needs to have one full rotation to assist the motor and provide both the extending and retracting of the shades, thus, if no attempt had been made opening up the cover previously, the spring should be fine.

My guess is like what all of us had been experiencing, broken tooth & worn out teeth on the gear piece and loosen shaft which in the other words, contact & 'grip' is not 'firm' and due to prolong holding on the extending & retracting switch when apply.

Here are some pictures...

The 'new' Gear is in 'Nylon'. I was told that it is harder than the original material. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's machined out, and as for supply I gotta check with my friend (the guy who work on the fabrication of the parts), if they want to take orders on this.

I think basically, for example mine, both the gear and the small shaft & the holder needs to work on. The shaft has been fabricated a little bigger together with the top & bottom holder of the shaft (bottom & top cover) to correct fit, thus it does not 'moved' even a bit, but this will definitely wear out after years in used due to the movement & contact of the shaft. (sorry guys, I'm not really good in my English, so, there might be some thing I might 'termed' it wrongly).

I would suggest that it would be better to ship your motor to him and let him fabricate whatever is needed (except the BIG Gear piece/that piece he's not fabricating), and test it out to confirm that it's working before shipping it back to you guys, and see if he's willing to provide some warranty to it.

The reason is, when I started, I only fabricated the gear, and when it came back, the gear still slips but slightly better than before, so we measured on the shaft and found out that it was kinda 'smaller' by 0.03mm from the holder due to movement contact overtimed, and after that, it works like new.

Will check and fill you guys up later.:)

OK, here's the update from the guy who 'custom made' my Rear Electric Sunshade's gear & shaft...

1) Only 'Motor' which is working (which means, gear slippin while the shade is extending or retracting). WEAK or DEAD 'motor' cannot be help...

2) Custom Made/Fabricate 1 Gear piece, 1 Small Shaft piece, Aligning Motor & Skimming

3) DO not send the whole sunshade...

4) Upon receiving 'motor', takes 5 days to fabricate and test, overall should take no more than a week, before shipping it back...

5) Charges is US$120.00 for the 'parts' and US$35 for Regular Registered Postal Services (13-15working days) to US, US$70 EMS Services (5-7working days to USA), other country, email me first...(based on overall 1kg weight package)

6) Warranty is 3 months against 'Slippin' & 'Broken Gear Piece'. Shipping will be borne by 'sender' to us, and we'll ship it back once it's done at our own cost for 'warranty'.

7) You are advice to 'open' up the 'Motor' in advance, and snap pictures on the 'internal' of the 'Motor' and email us the pix for references before shipping us the 'Motor'. This is to ensure parts mentioned are indeed originally belongs to you & confirm 'Faulty'. We will do the same when the work is done.

Any questions, please ask, so I can refer back to him (my friend) for answers. TQ!

You'll have to remove...
1) Speaker Cover
2) 3rd Brake Light
3) First Aid Kit Compartment
4) C Pillar Cover
5) Speaker Shelf...finally
6) THE Sunshade (screws located/access from boot/trunk area) see pix provided earlier

Had a problem with my previous E39 M5, you press the button it doesnt do a thing, you open the trunk and tap on the mechanism it goes down, at the time the dealer told me to use it once in a while or symptoms will continue due to gears becoming stuck caused by dried grease.

What a world of wonder those sunshades; you use it it slips a gear like it is mentioned here and fails and you dont use it then it fails due to not being used:D

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if the motor operates the roller blind mechanism as well or only the two metal arms?

If only the two metal arms, does anyone know how to repair the roller mechanism as the return spring appears to have lost some of its tension.

Thank you in advance.
Shane

The roller blind mechanism...Well, when the extending or retracting switch is apply, the 'motor' moves, and the gear pieces within rotates. The left right Arms which is attached to the Main Gear Piece Shaft 'turns', and this in turn, push & pull the 'lever' at the Metal Arms base.

The 'return spring' must have a one full turn/360 degree to assist the motor, for the extending & retracting. You'll have to open up the cover on the motor, be careful, when the cover is lifted up, the tension on the spring will 'release'. If there's a release, that means your 'return spring' is ok. If not, then you'll have to use 'plier/clipper' to make a one full turn.

There's a lock nut located at the tip of the motor piece to 'hold' the release, so use it.

Look at the pictures. Hope this helps...:p

p/s: pls.excuse my English!

Hi tony22,

Great pics and advice.

Looking at them, I understand the workings of the:
- Motor Piece,
- Spring (as indicated) and
- Sunshade Metal Arms.

In my case, the above mechanisms operate perfectly and in fact, I have a good spare mechanism (blind was destroyed).
The problem I have is that the blind itself does not easily rewind itself onto the roll (?) and I was wondering if that too has a spring or is aided by the Motor.

Thank you again.
Shane

I dont hear any slipping and there is no debris as I cleaned and lubricated the mechanism before installation.

The mechanism extends and retracts without a problem - it is the actual blind that does not wind itself back onto the roll.

Then it should be the 'blind roller'...can help much on this one. Probably there's a 'spring' or something (like you mentioned earlier) which is attached at both end of the 'roller'. Coz if the Metal Arms can extend & retract, that's the end of the 'Motor' mechanism :surrender:!

Sorry for the confusion due to my lousy English.

Let's see if others can assist you.

Hello forum, the blind on my 1998 CL600 was working perfectly well and all of a sudden, it lock in the up position. It is no longer responding and cannot hear any sort of noise when pressing the switch in aany direction. I've checked the fuse (nÂş35) and it is fine. Any idea on what the problem could be? As I said, it was working perfectly and smoothly with no problems what so ever.

I posted not long ago about the same problem. mine gets stuck on the upper position as well.

The motor is not very loud, only time you can actually tell is at night with the windows up. Press the button and see if you can hear a buzzing noise (mine was very quiet) Or have a friend try to listen from the backseat.

If you hear anything than your motor should be fine but maybe fatigued.
Also, it can be a bad switch. Double check the switch as well before you decide to disassemble the back seat and so on.

There isn't much to do besides opening the motor yourself and see the problem. I did some research and turns out this was an expensive option and buying the sunshade separate even now days is really expensive.
